Tháp Ba-bên

¹Bấy giờ cả thế giới đều có cùng một ngôn ngữ và dùng chung các ngôn từ. ²Từ phương Đông, họ ra đi và gặp một đồng bằng trong đất Si-nê-a và định cư tại đó. ³Họ nói với nhau: “Nào, chúng ta hãy làm gạch và nung trong lửa.” Thời đó, người ta dùng gạch thay cho đá, và nhựa chai thế cho hồ. ⁴Họ còn nói: “Nào, chúng ta hãy xây cho mình một thành và dựng một tháp có đỉnh cao đến tận trời để chúng ta được nổi danh và không bị tản lạc khắp trên mặt đất.”
⁵Đức Giê-hô-va ngự xuống để xem thành và tháp mà con cái loài người đang xây dựng. ⁶Đức Giê-hô-va phán: “Nầy, chúng cùng một dân tộc, chung một ngôn ngữ. Chúng mới khởi công mà đã như thế thì về sau sẽ không có việc gì chúng đã hoạch định mà không làm được. ⁷Thôi! Chúng Ta hãy xuống, làm lộn xộn tiếng nói của chúng, để chúng không hiểu được tiếng nói của nhau.” ⁸Rồi từ nơi đó, Đức Giê-hô-va làm cho loài người tản ra khắp trên mặt đất, và họ ngưng công việc xây cất thành. ⁹Bởi vậy, chỗ đó được gọi là Ba-bên,⚓ vì tại đó Đức Giê-hô-va làm lộn xộn tiếng nói của cả thế giới, và từ đây Ngài làm cho loài người tản ra khắp mặt đất.

Gia phả của Áp-ram

¹⁰Đây là dòng dõi của Sem.
Hai năm sau trận lụt, Sem được một trăm tuổi, sinh A-bác-sát. ¹¹Sau khi sinh A-bác-sát, Sem còn sống được năm trăm năm, sinh thêm con trai con gái.
¹²A-bác-sát được ba mươi lăm tuổi, sinh Sê-lách. ¹³Sau khi sinh Sê-lách, A-bác-sát còn sống được bốn trăm lẻ ba năm, sinh con trai con gái.
¹⁴Sê-lách được ba mươi tuổi, sinh Hê-be. ¹⁵Sau khi sinh Hê-be, Sê-lách còn sống được bốn trăm lẻ ba năm, sinh thêm con trai con gái.
¹⁶Hê-be được ba mươi bốn tuổi, sinh Pê-léc. ¹⁷Sau khi sinh Pê-léc, Hê-be còn sống được bốn trăm ba mươi năm, sinh thêm con trai con gái.
¹⁸Pê-léc được ba mươi tuổi, sinh Rê-hu. ¹⁹Sau khi sinh Rê-hu, Pê-léc còn sống được hai trăm lẻ chín năm, sinh thêm con trai con gái.
²⁰Rê-hu được ba mươi hai tuổi, sinh Sê-rúc. ²¹Sau khi sinh Sê-rúc, Rê-hu còn sống được hai trăm lẻ bảy năm, sinh thêm con trai con gái.
²²Sê-rúc được ba mươi tuổi, sinh Na-cô. ²³Sau khi sinh Na-cô, Sê-rúc còn sống được hai trăm năm, sinh thêm con trai con gái.
²⁴Na-cô được hai mươi chín tuổi, sinh Tha-rê. ²⁵Sau khi sinh Tha-rê, Na-cô còn sống được một trăm mười chín năm, sinh thêm con trai con gái.
²⁶Còn Tha-rê được bảy mươi tuổi, sinh Áp-ram, Na-cô và Ha-ran.

Dòng dõi Tha-rê

²⁷Đây là dòng dõi của Tha-rê: Tha-rê sinh Áp-ram, Na-cô và Ha-ran; Ha-ran sinh Lót. ²⁸Ha-ran qua đời tại quê hương mình, tức là U-rơ, thuộc xứ Canh-đê, khi cha của ông là Tha-rê còn sống. ²⁹Áp-ram và Na-cô cưới vợ; vợ Áp-ram tên là Sa-rai, còn vợ Na-cô tên là Minh-ca. Minh-ca và Dích-ca là con gái của Ha-ran. ³⁰Sa-rai hiếm muộn, không có con.
³¹Tha-rê dẫn Áp-ram, con trai mình, Lót, con trai Ha-ran, cháu mình, và Sa-rai, vợ Áp-ram, tức dâu mình, cùng ra khỏi U-rơ, thuộc xứ Canh-đê, hướng đến Ca-na-an. Nhưng khi đến Cha-ran thì họ định cư tại đó. ³²Tha-rê hưởng thọ được hai trăm lẻ năm tuổi, rồi qua đời tại Cha-ran.

The Tower of Babel

¹Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. ²As people moved eastward,⚓ they found a plain in Shinar⚓ and settled there.
³They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. ⁴Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”
⁵But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. ⁶The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. ⁷Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”
⁸So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. ⁹That is why it was called Babel⚓ —because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

From Shem to Abram

¹⁰This is the account of Shem’s family line.
Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father⚓ of Arphaxad. ¹¹And after he became the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters.
¹²When Arphaxad had lived 35 years, he became the father of Shelah. ¹³And after he became the father of Shelah, Arphaxad lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.⚓
¹⁴When Shelah had lived 30 years, he became the father of Eber. ¹⁵And after he became the father of Eber, Shelah lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
¹⁶When Eber had lived 34 years, he became the father of Peleg. ¹⁷And after he became the father of Peleg, Eber lived 430 years and had other sons and daughters.
¹⁸When Peleg had lived 30 years, he became the father of Reu. ¹⁹And after he became the father of Reu, Peleg lived 209 years and had other sons and daughters.
²⁰When Reu had lived 32 years, he became the father of Serug. ²¹And after he became the father of Serug, Reu lived 207 years and had other sons and daughters.
²²When Serug had lived 30 years, he became the father of Nahor. ²³And after he became the father of Nahor, Serug lived 200 years and had other sons and daughters.
²⁴When Nahor had lived 29 years, he became the father of Terah. ²⁵And after he became the father of Terah, Nahor lived 119 years and had other sons and daughters.
²⁶After Terah had lived 70 years, he became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.

Abram’s Family

²⁷This is the account of Terah’s family line.
Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot. ²⁸While his father Terah was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, in the land of his birth. ²⁹Abram and Nahor both married. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milkah; she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milkah and Iskah. ³⁰Now Sarai was childless because she was not able to conceive.
³¹Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to Harran, they settled there.
³²Terah lived 205 years, and he died in Harran.
