Áp-ram Và A-ga

¹Lúc ấy, Sa-rai, vợ Áp-ram không sinh con được. Bà có một đầy tớ gái người Ai-cập tên là A-ga. ²Sa-rai nói với Áp-ram: “Vì CHÚA không cho tôi sinh sản, ông hãy ăn ở với con đầy tớ gái của tôi đi; có lẽ nhờ nó tôi có thể có được gia đình.”
Áp-ram nghe theo lời Sa-rai. ³Thế là sau mười năm kiều ngụ tại xứ Ca-na-an, Sa-rai đưa A-ga, người đầy tớ gái Ai-cập của mình, cho Áp-ram làm vợ. ⁴Áp-ram ăn ở với A-ga và nàng thụ thai.
Biết mình đã có thai, A-ga khinh bỉ bà chủ mình. ⁵Sa-rai nói với Áp-ram: “Lỗi này ông phải chịu! Tôi trao con đầy tớ gái tôi vào vòng tay ông, và bây giờ khi thấy mình có thai, mắt nó khinh bỉ tôi; nguyện CHÚA phân xử giữa ông và tôi.”
⁶Nhưng Áp-ram đáp: “Đầy tớ gái của bà ở trong tay bà, bà muốn làm gì thì làm!” Sa-rai hành hạ A-ga, nàng bỏ chủ trốn đi.

A-ga Và Ích-ma-ên

⁷Thiên sứ của CHÚA gặp A-ga bên suối giữa sa mạc, trên đường đi Shu-rơ, ⁸và hỏi: “Này A-ga, đầy tớ của Sa-rai, chị từ đâu đến đây, và chị định đi đâu?”
Nàng đáp: “Tôi đi trốn Sa-rai, bà chủ tôi!”
⁹Thiên sứ của CHÚA bảo: “Chị hãy về với bà chủ và chịu phục dưới tay bà đi.” ¹⁰Thiên sứ của CHÚA lại nói: “Ta sẽ làm cho dòng dõi chị gia tăng đông đảo đến nỗi không ai đếm được.
¹¹Chị đang có thai
Và sẽ sinh con trai,
Chị hãy đặt tên cho nó là Ích-ma-ên⚓
Vì CHÚA đã đoái thương cảnh khốn khổ của chị.
¹²Con trai chị sẽ như một con lừa rừng,
Cánh tay nó sẽ chống mọi người
Và mọi người chống lại nó,
Và nó sẽ sống đối nghịch
Với tất cả anh em nó.”
¹³A-ga gọi CHÚA, Đấng phán dạy nàng là “Đức Chúa Trời thấy rõ,” vì nàng nói: “Bây giờ, tôi đã thấy Chúa là Đấng đoái xem tôi!” ¹⁴Vì thế, nàng đặt tên suối nước là “Bê-la-cha-roi.”⚓ Dòng suối ấy chảy giữa Ca-đê và Bê-rết.
¹⁵Nàng sinh cho Áp-ram một con trai, ông đặt tên con là Ích-ma-ên. ¹⁶Áp-ram đã được tám mươi sáu tuổi khi A-ga sinh Ích-ma-ên cho ông.

Hagar and Ishmael

¹Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; ²so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”
Abram agreed to what Sarai said. ³So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. ⁴He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.
When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. ⁵Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.”
⁶“Your slave is in your hands,” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.
⁷The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. ⁸And he said, “Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”
“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.
⁹Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” ¹⁰The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”
¹¹The angel of the Lord also said to her:
“You are now pregnant
and you will give birth to a son.
You shall name him Ishmael,⚓
for the Lord has heard of your misery.
¹²He will be a wild donkey of a man;
his hand will be against everyone
and everyone’s hand against him,
and he will live in hostility
toward⚓ all his brothers.”
¹³She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen⚓ the One who sees me.” ¹⁴That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi⚓ ; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered.
¹⁵So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne. ¹⁶Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.
