Người Y-sơ-ra-ên bại trận. – Cái chết của Sau-lơ và các con

(I Sử 10:1-12)

 1Bấy giờ, người Phi-li-tin giao chiến với Y-sơ-ra-ên. Người Y-sơ-ra-ên chạy trốn trước mặt quân Phi-li-tin, và nhiều người bị giết, ngã chết trên núi Ghinh-bô-a. 2Người Phi-li-tin bám sát Sau-lơ và các con trai ông. Họ giết Giô-na-than, A-bi-na-đáp, và Manh-ki-sua, là các con của Sau-lơ. 3Thế trận trở nên khốc liệt cho Sau-lơ. Lính bắn cung nhận ra và bắn trúng vua, nên vua bị trọng thương. 4Sau-lơ nói với người vác khí giới của mình: “Hãy rút gươm ngươi và đâm ta đi, kẻo bọn không cắt bì kia đến đâm ta và lăng nhục ta.” Nhưng người vác khí giới không dám làm vì quá sợ hãi. Vì thế, Sau-lơ lấy gươm và tự sấn mình trên mũi gươm. 5Khi người vác khí giới của Sau-lơ thấy vua đã chết, thì cũng sấn mình trên mũi gươm mà chết theo. 6Như vậy Sau-lơ với ba con trai, người vác khí giới và tất cả thuộc hạ của vua cùng chết trong ngày hôm ấy.
  7Những người Y-sơ-ra-ên ở bên kia thung lũng và bên kia sông Giô-đanh, thấy quân lính Y-sơ-ra-ên chạy trốn, Sau-lơ và ba con trai vua đã chết, thì bỏ thành mà trốn đi. Người Phi-li-tin đến chiếm và ở trong các thành đó.
  8Hôm sau, người Phi-li-tin đến lục soát những xác chết, thấy Sau-lơ và ba con trai vua ngã chết trên núi Ghinh-bô-a. 9Chúng cắt đầu Sau-lơ, lột binh giáp của vua, và sai sứ giả đi báo tin mừng nầy khắp đất Phi-li-tin, trong các đền thờ của thần tượng họ và trong toàn dân. 10Chúng để vũ khí của Sau-lơ trong đền thờ nữ thần Át-tạt-tê, và treo xác vua vào tường thành Bết-san.
  11Nhưng khi người Gia-be ở Ga-la-át biết việc người Phi-li-tin đã đối xử với Sau-lơ, 12thì tất cả những dũng sĩ lên đường, đi suốt đêm. Họ hạ thi thể của Sau-lơ và các con vua khỏi tường thành Bết-san, rồi đem về Gia-be và thiêu các thi thể tại đó. 13Họ lấy hài cốt chôn dưới cây liễu ở Gia-be, và kiêng ăn trong bảy ngày.

The Tragic End of Saul and His Sons

 1Now ⚓the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount ⚓Gilboa. 2Then the Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons. And the Philistines killed ⚓Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul’s sons. 3⚓The battle became fierce against Saul. The archers hit him, and he was severely wounded by the archers.
  4⚓Then Saul said to his armorbearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest ⚓these uncircumcised men come and thrust me through and abuse me.”
 But his armorbearer would not, ⚓for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword and ⚓fell on it. 5And when his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword, and died with him. 6So Saul, his three sons, his armorbearer, and all his men died together that same day.
  7And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, and those who were on the other side of the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them. 8So it happened the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9And they cut off his head and stripped off his armor, and sent word throughout the land of the Philistines, to ⚓proclaim it in the temple of their idols and among the people. 10⚓Then they put his armor in the temple of the ⚓Ashtoreths, and ⚓they fastened his body to the wall of ⚓Beth Shan.
  11⚓Now when the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12⚓all the valiant men arose and traveled all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth Shan; and they came to Jabesh and ⚓burned them there. 13Then they took their bones and ⚓buried them under the tamarisk tree at ⚓Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
