Sau-lơ bắt bớ Hội Thánh

¹Sau-lơ tán thành về việc Ê-tiên bị giết. Trong ngày ấy, Hội Thánh ở Giê-ru-sa-lem gặp cơn bắt bớ dữ dội; ngoại trừ các sứ đồ, tất cả tín hữu đều bị tan lạc trong các miền Giu-đê và Sa-ma-ri. ²Những người tin kính chôn cất Ê-tiên và than khóc ông rất nhiều. ³Nhưng Sau-lơ tàn hại Hội Thánh, xông vào từng nhà bắt cả đàn ông lẫn đàn bà bỏ tù.⚓

Tin Lành được rao giảng ở Sa-ma-ri. – Thuật sĩ Si-môn

⁴Vậy, những người bị tan lạc đi từ nơi nầy đến nơi khác truyền giảng Tin Lành. ⁵Phi-líp đi xuống thành Sa-ma-ri rao giảng Đấng Christ cho dân chúng ở đó. ⁶Đoàn dân nghe ông giảng và thấy các dấu lạ ông làm thì đồng lòng chăm chú nghe ông; ⁷vì có những uế linh kêu lớn tiếng mà ra khỏi nhiều người bị ám; nhiều người bại và què cũng được chữa lành. ⁸Vì thế, trong thành tràn ngập niềm vui.
⁹Bấy giờ, trong thành đó có một người tên Si-môn, trước kia hành nghề ma thuật, tự cho mình là người vĩ đại, làm cho dân Sa-ma-ri kinh ngạc. ¹⁰Mọi người từ trẻ đến già đều nghe theo ông, nói rằng: “Người nầy là quyền năng của Đức Chúa Trời, gọi là Đại Năng.” ¹¹Họ nghe theo ông vì lâu nay ông ta lấy ma thuật làm cho họ kinh ngạc. ¹²Nhưng khi họ đã tin Phi-líp, người rao giảng Tin Lành về vương quốc Đức Chúa Trời và danh Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ cho họ, thì cả nam lẫn nữ đều nhận báp-têm. ¹³Chính Si-môn cũng tin; sau khi nhận báp-têm, ông ở luôn với Phi-líp. Thấy những phép mầu và dấu lạ lớn được thực hiện, ông rất kinh ngạc.
¹⁴Các sứ đồ ở Giê-ru-sa-lem nghe tin dân chúng Sa-ma-ri đã tiếp nhận đạo Đức Chúa Trời liền sai Phi-e-rơ và Giăng đến với họ. ¹⁵Hai ông đến nơi, cầu nguyện cho những người nầy để họ nhận lãnh Đức Thánh Linh. ¹⁶Vì Đức Thánh Linh chưa giáng xuống trên ai cả, họ chỉ nhân danh Chúa là Đức Chúa Jêsus nhận báp-têm mà thôi. ¹⁷Phi-e-rơ và Giăng đặt tay trên họ, họ liền nhận lãnh Đức Thánh Linh. ¹⁸Khi thấy các sứ đồ đặt tay lên thì Thánh Linh được ban xuống, Si-môn liền lấy tiền bạc dâng cho hai sứ đồ, và nói: ¹⁹“Xin cũng cho tôi thẩm quyền ấy, để tôi đặt tay trên ai thì người ấy nhận lãnh Đức Thánh Linh.” ²⁰Nhưng Phi-e-rơ trả lời rằng: “Tiền bạc của anh cũng hư vong với anh, vì anh tưởng có thể lấy tiền bạc mua được sự ban tặng của Đức Chúa Trời! ²¹Anh chẳng được dự phần hoặc chia sẻ trong việc nầy đâu, vì lòng anh không ngay thẳng trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời. ²²Vậy, hãy ăn năn việc ác của anh và cầu nguyện với Chúa, để may ra Ngài sẽ tha thứ ý tưởng ấy trong lòng anh. ²³Vì tôi thấy anh đang ở trong mật đắng và trong xiềng xích tội ác.” ²⁴Si-môn trả lời: “Xin hãy cầu nguyện Chúa cho tôi, để tôi không mắc phải điều quý ông nói đó.”
²⁵Sau khi đã làm chứng và giảng đạo Chúa, Phi-e-rơ và Giăng trở về Giê-ru-sa-lem, vừa đi vừa truyền giảng Tin Lành trong nhiều làng của người Sa-ma-ri.

Hoạn quan Ê-thi-ô-pi trở lại đạo

²⁶Bấy giờ, có một thiên sứ của Chúa phán với Phi-líp: “Hãy đứng dậy đi về phía nam,⚓ theo con đường từ Giê-ru-sa-lem xuống Ga-xa. Đường ấy vắng vẻ.” ²⁷Ông đứng dậy và đi. Kìa, có một hoạn quan Ê-thi-ô-pi, làm quan lớn của Can-đác, nữ hoàng nước Ê-thi-ô-pi, quản lý cả kho tàng của bà. Ông đã đến Giê-ru-sa-lem để thờ phượng; ²⁸và khi trở về, ngồi trên xe ngựa, đọc sách tiên tri Ê-sai. ²⁹Thánh Linh phán với Phi-líp: “Hãy lại gần và theo cho kịp xe đó.” ³⁰Phi-líp chạy đến, nghe ông ta đang đọc sách tiên tri Ê-sai thì nói rằng: “Ông hiểu lời mình đang đọc đó không?” ³¹Hoạn quan trả lời: “Nếu không có ai hướng dẫn, làm sao tôi hiểu được?” Rồi ông mời Phi-líp lên xe ngồi với mình. ³²Đoạn Kinh Thánh ông đang đọc như thế nầy:
“Người đã bị dắt đi như chiên đến hàng làm thịt,
Như chiên con câm lặng trước mặt kẻ hớt lông, Người chẳng hề mở miệng.
³³Trong khi Người bị sỉ nhục, công lý đã bị tước đoạt.
Ai có thể nói đến dòng dõi Người?
Vì sự sống Người đã bị cất khỏi đất rồi.”⚓
³⁴Hoạn quan nói với Phi-líp: “Xin hỏi ông, nhà tiên tri đã nói điều nầy để chỉ về ai? Về chính mình hay về người nào khác?” ³⁵Phi-líp liền mở miệng, bắt đầu từ chỗ Kinh Thánh đó mà rao giảng Tin Lành về Đức Chúa Jêsus cho ông. ³⁶Khi hai người đang đi, gặp chỗ có nước, hoạn quan nói: “Nầy, nước đây, có điều gì ngăn trở tôi nhận báp-têm chăng?”⚓ ³⁸Ông bảo dừng xe lại, rồi cả hai đều xuống nước, và Phi-líp làm báp-têm cho hoạn quan. ³⁹Khi lên khỏi nước, Thánh Linh của Chúa đem Phi-líp đi; hoạn quan không thấy ông nữa, và cứ vui mừng tiếp tục cuộc hành trình. ⁴⁰Người ta thấy Phi-líp ở thành A-xốt; trên đường đi đến Sê-sa-rê, ông rao giảng Tin Lành cho tất cả các thành mình đã ghé qua.

Saul Persecutes the Church

¹Now Saul was consenting to his death.
At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and ⚓they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. ²And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and ⚓made great lamentation over him.
³As for Saul, ⚓he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison.

Christ Is Preached in Samaria

⁴Therefore ⚓those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word. ⁵Then ⚓Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. ⁶And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. ⁷For ⚓unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. ⁸And there was great joy in that city.

The Sorcerer’s Profession of Faith

⁹But there was a certain man called Simon, who previously ⚓practiced sorcery in the city and ⚓astonished the people of Samaria, claiming that he was someone great, ¹⁰to whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is the great power of God.” ¹¹And they heeded him because he had astonished them with his sorceries for a long time. ¹²But when they believed Philip as he preached the things ⚓concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. ¹³Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized he continued with Philip, and was amazed, seeing the miracles and signs which were done.

The Sorcerer’s Sin

¹⁴Now when the ⚓apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, ¹⁵who, when they had come down, prayed for them ⚓that they might receive the Holy Spirit. ¹⁶For ⚓as yet He had fallen upon none of them. ⚓They had only been baptized in ⚓the name of the Lord Jesus. ¹⁷Then ⚓they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
¹⁸And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, ¹⁹saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”
²⁰But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because ⚓you thought that ⚓the gift of God could be purchased with money! ²¹You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your ⚓heart is not right in the sight of God. ²²Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God ⚓if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. ²³For I see that you are ⚓poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.”
²⁴Then Simon answered and said, ⚓“Pray to the Lord for me, that none of the things which you have spoken may come upon me.”
²⁵So when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.

Christ Is Preached to an Ethiopian

²⁶Now an angel of the Lord spoke to ⚓Philip, saying, “Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is desert. ²⁷So he arose and went. And behold, ⚓a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and ⚓had come to Jerusalem to worship, ²⁸was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. ²⁹Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go near and overtake this chariot.”
³⁰So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?”
³¹And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. ³²The place in the Scripture which he read was this:
⚓“He was led as a sheep to the slaughter;
And as a lamb before its shearer is silent,
⚓So He opened not His mouth.
³³In His humiliation His ⚓justice was taken away,
And who will declare His generation?
For His life is ⚓taken from the earth.”
³⁴So the eunuch answered Philip and said, “I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?” ³⁵Then Philip opened his mouth, ⚓and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. ³⁶Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. ⚓What hinders me from being baptized?”
³⁷Then Philip said, ⚓“If you believe with all your heart, you may.”
And he answered and said, ⚓“I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”
³⁸So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. ³⁹Now when they came up out of the water, ⚓the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing. ⁴⁰But Philip was found at Azotus. And passing through, he preached in all the cities till he came to ⚓Caesarea.
