Dân Ma-đi-an bị bại trận

¹Đức Giê-hô-va phán với Môi-se: ²“Hãy báo thù người Ma-đi-an cho dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, sau đó con sẽ được về cùng tổ tiên.” ³Vậy Môi-se truyền bảo dân chúng rằng: “Anh em hãy trang bị khí giới để tiến đánh dân Ma-đi-an và báo thù dân đó cho Đức Giê-hô-va. ⁴Mỗi bộ tộc Y-sơ-ra-ên phải gửi một nghìn quân ra trận.”
⁵Vậy trong mỗi bộ tộc Y-sơ-ra-ên, người ta chọn một nghìn quân và có mười hai nghìn người được trang bị khí giới để ra trận. ⁶Môi-se sai mười hai nghìn người đó ra trận tức là sai mỗi bộ tộc một nghìn người, cùng với Phi-nê-a, con trai của thầy tế lễ Ê-lê-a-sa, đem theo những khí giới thánh và kèn thúc quân. ⁷Họ giao tranh với dân Ma-đi-an như Đức Giê-hô-va đã phán dạy Môi-se và họ giết tất cả người nam. ⁸Trong số những người bị giết có năm vua Ma-đi-an là: Ê-vi, Rê-kem, Xu-rơ, Hu-rơ và Rê-ba. Họ cũng dùng gươm giết Ba-la-am, con trai của Bê-ô. ⁹Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên bắt phụ nữ và trẻ em Ma-đi-an làm tù binh, cướp tất cả súc vật, bầy chiên và của cải của chúng. ¹⁰Họ đốt hết các thành nơi dân Ma-đi-an ở và các doanh trại, ¹¹rồi thu hết của cải, chiến lợi phẩm, kể cả người lẫn súc vật. ¹²Họ đem những tù binh và những chiến lợi phẩm đến trước Môi-se, thầy tế lễ Ê-lê-a-sa và hội chúng Y-sơ-ra-ên đang đóng trại tại đồng bằng Mô-áp, gần sông Giô-đanh đối diện Giê-ri-cô.
¹³Bấy giờ Môi-se, thầy tế lễ Ê-lê-a-sa, và tất cả những người lãnh đạo đi ra ngoài trại quân để gặp họ. ¹⁴Môi-se nổi giận với các cấp chỉ huy quân đội vừa đánh trận trở về, tức là những chỉ huy trưởng một nghìn quân và những chỉ huy trưởng một trăm quân. ¹⁵Môi-se nói với họ: “Sao anh em để tất cả phụ nữ sống sót? ¹⁶Những phụ nữ nầy theo mưu kế của Ba-la-am mà dụ dỗ dân Y-sơ-ra-ên cúng thờ Phê-ô, phạm tội trọng với Đức Giê-hô-va và khiến hội chúng của Đức Giê-hô-va phải mang họa.⚓ ¹⁷Vậy bây giờ, hãy giết hết trẻ em nam và phụ nữ nào đã ăn nằm với người nam, ¹⁸nhưng chừa lại tất cả những thiếu nữ chưa ăn nằm với người nam nào. ¹⁹Còn về phần anh em, hãy đóng trại ngoài trại quân trong bảy ngày. Ai giết người hoặc đụng đến xác chết thì người đó phải tự thanh tẩy mình vào ngày thứ ba và ngày thứ bảy. ²⁰Cũng phải thanh tẩy tất cả quần áo, mọi vật bằng da, mọi vật bằng lông dê và mọi đồ đạc bằng gỗ.”
²¹Thầy tế lễ Ê-lê-a-sa nói với những người lính đi đánh trận về rằng: “Đây là quy định của luật pháp mà Đức Giê-hô-va đã truyền cho Môi-se: ²²Vàng, bạc, đồng, sắt, thiếc, chì, ²³tức là mọi vật có thể chịu được lửa thì anh em phải đưa ngang qua lửa để được tẩy sạch. Tuy nhiên, cũng phải dùng nước tẩy uế để thanh tẩy cho vật ấy nữa. Còn bất cứ vật gì không thể chịu được lửa thì phải cho qua nước tẩy uế đó. ²⁴Vào ngày thứ bảy, các con phải giặt áo quần mình cho sạch sẽ rồi mới được vào trại quân.”
²⁵Đức Giê-hô-va lại phán với Môi-se: ²⁶“Con và thầy tế lễ Ê-lê-a-sa cùng với các thủ lĩnh của hội chúng hãy kiểm kê các chiến lợi phẩm đã thu được, cả người lẫn súc vật, ²⁷rồi chia đôi chiến lợi phẩm đó cho những chiến sĩ và cả hội chúng. ²⁸Trong phần thuộc về các chiến sĩ đã ra trận, hoặc người hoặc bò hoặc lừa hoặc chiên, con phải lấy một phần năm trăm đem dâng cho Đức Giê-hô-va. ²⁹Hãy lấy phần dâng hiến đó trong một nửa thuộc về các chiến sĩ giao cho thầy tế lễ Ê-lê-a-sa, làm lễ vật dâng lên Đức Giê-hô-va. ³⁰Còn trong một nửa kia thuộc về dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, con hãy lấy một phần năm mươi, hoặc người hoặc bò hoặc lừa hoặc chiên, tức là tất cả súc vật, và giao cho người Lê-vi, là người chịu trách nhiệm coi sóc Đền Tạm của Đức Giê-hô-va.”
³¹Môi-se và thầy tế lễ Ê-lê-a-sa làm đúng như Đức Giê-hô-va đã phán dạy Môi-se.
³²Số chiến lợi phẩm còn lại mà quân lính thu được là sáu trăm bảy mươi lăm nghìn con chiên; ³³bảy mươi hai nghìn con bò, ³⁴sáu mươi mốt nghìn con lừa đực, ³⁵và ba mươi hai nghìn trinh nữ.
³⁶Trong một nửa thuộc về những người đã ra trận là ba trăm ba mươi bảy nghìn năm trăm con chiên, ³⁷thì dâng cho Đức Giê-hô-va sáu trăm bảy mươi lăm con; ³⁸ba mươi sáu nghìn con bò, thì dâng cho Đức Giê-hô-va là bảy mươi hai con; ³⁹ba nghìn năm trăm con lừa đực, thì dâng cho Đức Giê-hô-va sáu mươi mốt con; ⁴⁰mười sáu nghìn người, thì dâng cho Đức Giê-hô-va là ba mươi hai người. ⁴¹Môi-se giao cho thầy tế lễ Ê-lê-a-sa phần dâng hiến làm lễ vật dâng cho Đức Giê-hô-va đúng như Ngài đã phán dạy Môi-se.
⁴²Một nửa kia thuộc về dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, tức là một nửa mà Môi-se đã chia với những người ra trận. ⁴³Một nửa nầy thuộc về hội chúng, gồm có: ba trăm ba mươi bảy nghìn năm trăm con chiên, ⁴⁴ba mươi sáu nghìn con bò, ⁴⁵ba mươi nghìn năm trăm con lừa, ⁴⁶và mười sáu nghìn người. ⁴⁷Trong một nửa nầy thuộc về dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, Môi-se lấy ra một phần năm mươi từ người hay súc vật và giao cho người Lê-vi, là những người có trách nhiệm coi sóc Đền Tạm của Đức Giê-hô-va đúng như Đức Giê-hô-va đã phán dạy mình.
⁴⁸Các cấp chỉ huy tức là chỉ huy trưởng một nghìn quân và chỉ huy trưởng một trăm quân đến gần Môi-se, ⁴⁹và nói: “Các đầy tớ ông đã kiểm tra các chiến sĩ là những người ở dưới quyền chúng tôi và không thiếu một người nào. ⁵⁰Mỗi người trong chúng tôi có đem lễ vật bằng vàng đã thu được như dây chuyền, xuyến, nhẫn, bông tai, và kiềng, dâng lên Đức Giê-hô-va để chuộc tội cho mình trước mặt Ngài.” ⁵¹Môi-se và thầy tế lễ Ê-lê-a-sa tiếp nhận số vàng, tức là tất cả đồ trang sức ấy. ⁵²Tất cả lễ vật bằng vàng mà những chỉ huy trưởng một nghìn quân và chỉ huy trưởng một trăm quân dâng cho Đức Giê-hô-va, tổng cộng khoảng một trăm chín mươi ký. ⁵³Mỗi chiến sĩ ra trận đều lấy chiến lợi phẩm cho riêng mình. ⁵⁴Vậy Môi-se và thầy tế lễ Ê-lê-a-sa tiếp nhận số vàng của các chỉ huy trưởng một nghìn quân và chỉ huy trưởng một trăm quân, rồi đem vào Lều Hội Kiến làm kỷ niệm cho dân Y-sơ-ra-ên trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va.

Vengeance on the Midianites

¹The Lord said to Moses, ²“Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.”
³So Moses said to the people, “Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites so that they may carry out the Lord’s vengeance on them. ⁴Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel.” ⁵So twelve thousand men armed for battle, a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel. ⁶Moses sent them into battle, a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling.
⁷They fought against Midian, as the Lord commanded Moses, and killed every man. ⁸Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba—the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword. ⁹The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder. ¹⁰They burned all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps. ¹¹They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals, ¹²and brought the captives, spoils and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho.
¹³Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. ¹⁴Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who returned from the battle.
¹⁵“Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them. ¹⁶“They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people. ¹⁷Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, ¹⁸but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.
¹⁹“Anyone who has killed someone or touched someone who was killed must stay outside the camp seven days. On the third and seventh days you must purify yourselves and your captives. ²⁰Purify every garment as well as everything made of leather, goat hair or wood.”
²¹Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, “This is what is required by the law that the Lord gave Moses: ²²Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, lead ²³and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing. And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water. ²⁴On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean. Then you may come into the camp.”

Dividing the Spoils

²⁵The Lord said to Moses, ²⁶“You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the community are to count all the people and animals that were captured. ²⁷Divide the spoils equally between the soldiers who took part in the battle and the rest of the community. ²⁸From the soldiers who fought in the battle, set apart as tribute for the Lord one out of every five hundred, whether people, cattle, donkeys or sheep. ²⁹Take this tribute from their half share and give it to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part. ³⁰From the Israelites’ half, select one out of every fifty, whether people, cattle, donkeys, sheep or other animals. Give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.” ³¹So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.
³²The plunder remaining from the spoils that the soldiers took was 675,000 sheep, ³³72,000 cattle, ³⁴61,000 donkeys ³⁵and 32,000 women who had never slept with a man.
³⁶The half share of those who fought in the battle was:
337,500 sheep, ³⁷of which the tribute for the Lord was 675;
³⁸36,000 cattle, of which the tribute for the Lord was 72;
³⁹30,500 donkeys, of which the tribute for the Lord was 61;
⁴⁰16,000 people, of whom the tribute for the Lord was 32.
⁴¹Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part, as the Lord commanded Moses.
⁴²The half belonging to the Israelites, which Moses set apart from that of the fighting men— ⁴³the community’s half—was 337,500 sheep, ⁴⁴36,000 cattle, ⁴⁵30,500 donkeys ⁴⁶and 16,000 people. ⁴⁷From the Israelites’ half, Moses selected one out of every fifty people and animals, as the Lord commanded him, and gave them to the Levites, who were responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.
⁴⁸Then the officers who were over the units of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—went to Moses ⁴⁹and said to him, “Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing. ⁵⁰So we have brought as an offering to the Lord the gold articles each of us acquired—armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces—to make atonement for ourselves before the Lord.”
⁵¹Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted from them the gold—all the crafted articles. ⁵²All the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds that Moses and Eleazar presented as a gift to the Lord weighed 16,750 shekels.⚓ ⁵³Each soldier had taken plunder for himself. ⁵⁴Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the Lord.
