Chiến tranh giữa Ít-ra-en và Giu-đa

¹Chiến tranh tiếp diễn lâu ngày giữa những người thuộc nhà Sau-lơ và nhà Đa-vít. Nhà Đa-vít càng ngày càng mạnh, còn nhà Sau-lơ càng ngày càng yếu.

Sáu con trai của Đa-vít

²Các con trai của Đa-vít sinh ra ở Hếp-rôn. Con trưởng nam là Am-môn, mẹ là A-hi-nô-am ở Ghít-rê-ên. ³Con thứ nhì là Ki-lê-áp, mẹ là A-bi-ga-in, vợ góa của Na-banh ở Cạt-mên. Con thứ ba là Áp-xa-lôm, mẹ là Ma-a-ca, con gái Thanh-mai, vua Ghê-sua. ⁴Con thứ tư là A-đô-ni-gia, mẹ là Ha-ghít. Con thứ năm là Sê-pha-tia, mẹ là A-bi-tan. ⁵Con thứ sáu là Ít-rê-am, mẹ là Éc-la, vợ Đa-vít. Đó là những con trai Đa-vít sinh ở Hếp-rôn.

Áp-ne về phe với Đa-vít

⁶Trong khi chiến tranh diễn ra giữa những người ủng hộ nhà Sau-lơ và những người ủng hộ nhà Đa-vít thì Áp-ne tìm cách lập mình làm lãnh tụ nhóm ủng hộ Sau-lơ. ⁷Sau-lơ có một người vợ lẽ tên Rít-ba, con gái Ai-gia. Ích-bô-sết hỏi Áp-ne, “Sao anh ăn nằm với vợ lẽ của cha tôi?”
⁸Áp-ne vô cùng tức giận về câu nói của Ích-bô-sết, nên ông đáp, “Tôi đã trung thành với Sau-lơ, gia đình ông ta cùng bạn hữu ông ta! Tôi đã không trao anh vào tay Đa-vít. Tôi đâu có phải là tên phản bội làm việc cho Giu-đa⚓ đâu? Bây giờ anh lại bảo tôi lăng nhăng với người đàn bà nầy! ⁹Nếu tôi không làm điều CHÚA đã hứa với Đa-vít thành sự thật thì xin CHÚA phạt tôi! ¹⁰Tôi sẽ lấy nước từ nhà Sau-lơ và khiến cho Đa-vít làm vua trên Ít-ra-en lẫn Giu-đa, từ Đan cho đến Bê-e-sê-ba!”⚓ ¹¹Ích-bô-sết không dám nói gì thêm với Áp-ne vì sợ ông ta.
¹²Áp-ne sai sứ hỏi thăm Đa-vít như sau, “Ai sẽ cai trị đất nước? Hãy lập ước với tôi, tôi sẽ giúp ông thống nhất cả Ít-ra-en.”
¹³Đa-vít trả lời, “Tốt! Ta sẽ lập ước với ngươi nhưng ta xin ngươi làm một điều. Ta chỉ có thể gặp ngươi nếu ngươi mang Mi-canh, con gái Sau-lơ đến cho ta.”
¹⁴Rồi Đa-vít sai sứ đến Ích-bô-sết, con trai Sau-lơ bảo rằng, “Hãy trả Mi-canh, vợ ta lại cho ta. Nàng đã được hứa gả cho ta, ta đã phải giết một trăm người Phi-li-tin, lấy dương bì của chúng mang về cho Sau-lơ để cưới nàng.”
¹⁵Vậy Ích-bô-sết sai người đến bắt Mi-canh khỏi tay chồng nàng là Ba-tiên, con của La-ít. ¹⁶Chồng Mi-canh vừa khóc vừa đi theo nàng đến Ba-hu-rim. Nhưng Áp-ne bảo, “Hãy đi về nhà đi.” Cho nên anh ta trở về nhà.
¹⁷Áp-ne nhắn các lãnh tụ Ít-ra-en như sau: “Các ngươi xưa nay vẫn muốn tôn Đa-vít làm vua. ¹⁸Bây giờ hãy thực hiện điều đó đi! CHÚA đã phán cùng Đa-vít, ‘Qua Đa-vít, ta sẽ giải cứu Ít-ra-en khỏi tay dân Phi-li-tin và mọi kẻ thù của họ.’”
¹⁹Áp-ne cũng nhắn như thế cho dân Bên-gia-min. Rồi ông đi đến Hếp-rôn thuật cho Đa-vít biết những gì người Bên-gia-min và Ít-ra-en định làm.
²⁰Áp-ne và hai mươi người đến cùng Đa-vít tại Hếp-rôn. Đa-vít bày một bữa tiệc tiếp đón họ.
²¹Áp-ne bảo Đa-vít, “Thưa chủ và vua tôi, tôi sẽ đi mang tất cả người Ít-ra-en về với vua. Rồi họ sẽ lập ước với vua để vua cai trị cả Ít-ra-en như vua muốn.”
Vậy Đa-vít để Áp-ne ra đi, nên ông ra đi bình yên.

Áp-ne chết

²²Lúc đó thì Giô-áp và các người của Đa-vít từ chiến trận trở về, mang theo nhiều chiến lợi phẩm lấy từ kẻ thù. Đa-vít đã để Áp-ne đi bình yên cho nên ông ta không có mặt với Đa-vít ở Hếp-rôn. ²³Khi Giô-áp và đạo quân đến Hếp-rôn thì các binh sĩ thuật với Giô-áp, “Áp-ne, con Nê-rơ, đến gặp vua Đa-vít, và Đa-vít để ông ta về bình yên.”
²⁴Giô-áp đến gặp vua và hỏi, “Vua làm gì kỳ vậy? Áp-ne đến với vua, tại sao vua để anh ta đi? Bây giờ anh ta đi mất rồi. ²⁵Vua biết Áp-ne, con Nê-rơ mà! Hắn chỉ đến để gạt vua thôi! Hắn đến để thăm dò những gì vua làm!”
²⁶Sau khi rời Đa-vít, Giô-áp liền sai sứ chạy theo Áp-ne, mang ông về từ giếng Xi-ra. Nhưng Đa-vít không hay biết chuyện đó. ²⁷Khi Áp-ne đến Hếp-rôn thì Giô-áp mang ông riêng ra ngoài cổng. Ông ta làm như muốn nói chuyện riêng với Áp-ne, rồi Giô-áp đâm Áp-ne vào bụng, Áp-ne chết. Vì Áp-ne đã giết A-sa-ên, em Giô-áp, nên Giô-áp giết Áp-ne để báo thù.
²⁸Về sau khi Đa-vít hay tin đó liền nói, “Nước ta và ta đời đời hoàn toàn vô tội về cái chết của Áp-ne, con Nê-rơ. CHÚA biết điều đó. ²⁹Giô-áp và nhà nó sẽ chịu trách nhiệm về việc nầy. Nguyện gia đình nó luôn luôn có người bị ghẻ chốc hay bệnh ngoài da. Nguyện chúng nó luôn luôn có người tàn tật. Nguyện có người trong gia đình nó bị chết vì giặc giã. Nguyện chúng nó luôn luôn có người bị đói.”
³⁰Giô-áp và A-bi-sai, em ông, giết Áp-ne, vì Áp-ne đã giết A-sa-ên, em họ, trong trận chiến ở Ghi-bê-ôn.
³¹Sau đó Đa-vít bảo Giô-áp cùng tất cả những người theo Giô-áp rằng, “Hãy xé quần áo các ngươi ra và mặc vải sô để tỏ lòng buồn thảm. Hãy than khóc cho Áp-ne.” Chính vua Đa-vít cũng đi sau quan tài Áp-ne. ³²Họ chôn ông ở Hếp-rôn. Đa-vít cùng dân chúng than khóc bên mộ Áp-ne.
³³Vua Đa-vít hát bài ai ca nầy cho Áp-ne.
“Áp-ne chết như người điên sao?
³⁴Hai tay người không bị trói.
Chân người không bị xiềng.
Người ngã chết trong tay kẻ độc ác.”
Rồi toàn dân than khóc Áp-ne. ³⁵Dân chúng đến khuyên Đa-vít ăn trong khi trời còn sáng nhưng ông hứa rằng, “Nếu ta ăn bánh hay thứ gì khác trước khi mặt trời lặn, nguyện Thượng Đế trừng phạt ta nặng nề!” ³⁶Toàn dân thấy mọi việc xảy ra, họ đồng ý với những gì vua đang làm và đã làm. ³⁷Ngày đó tất cả dân Giu-đa và Ít-ra-en hiểu rằng không phải Đa-vít ra lệnh giết Áp-ne, con Nê-rơ.
³⁸Đa-vít bảo các sĩ quan, “Các ngươi nên nhớ rằng hôm nay một vĩ nhân đã chết trong Ít-ra-en. ³⁹Mặc dù ta được bổ nhiệm làm vua nhưng ta còn cô thế. Các con trai Xê-ru-gia quá mạnh đối với ta. Nguyện CHÚA trừng phạt chúng nó thật xứng đáng.”

¹Now there was a long ⚓war between the house of Saul and the house of David. But David grew stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.

Sons of David

²Sons were born ⚓to David in Hebron: His firstborn was Amnon ⚓by Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; ³his second, Chileab, by Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite; the third, ⚓Absalom the son of Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, king ⚓of Geshur; ⁴the fourth, ⚓Adonijah the son of Haggith; the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital; ⁵and the sixth, Ithream, by David’s wife Eglah. These were born to David in Hebron.

Abner Joins Forces with David

⁶Now it was so, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner was strengthening his hold on the house of Saul.
⁷And Saul had a concubine, whose name was⚓Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah. So Ishbosheth said to Abner, “Why have you ⚓gone in to my father’s concubine?”
⁸Then Abner became very angry at the words of Ishbosheth, and said, “Am I ⚓a dog’s head that belongs to Judah? Today I show loyalty to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David; and you charge me today with a fault concerning this woman? ⁹⚓May God do so to Abner, and more also, if I do not do for David ⚓as the Lord has sworn to him— ¹⁰to transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul, and set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, ⚓from Dan to Beersheba.” ¹¹And he could not answer Abner another word, because he feared him.
¹²Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to David, saying, “Whose is the land?” saying also, “Make your covenant with me, and indeed my hand shall be with you to bring all Israel to you.”
¹³And David said, “Good, I will make a covenant with you. But one thing I require of you: ⚓you shall not see my face unless you first bring ⚓Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.” ¹⁴So David sent messengers to ⚓Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, saying, “Give me my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to myself ⚓for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.” ¹⁵And Ishbosheth sent and took her from her husband, from Paltiel the son of Laish. ¹⁶Then her husband went along with her to ⚓Bahurim, weeping behind her. So Abner said to him, “Go, return!” And he returned.
¹⁷Now Abner had communicated with the elders of Israel, saying, “In time past you were seeking for David to be king over you. ¹⁸Now then, do it!⚓For the Lord has spoken of David, saying, ‘By the hand of My servant David, I will save My people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and the hand of all their enemies.’ ” ¹⁹And Abner also spoke in the hearing of ⚓Benjamin. Then Abner also went to speak in the hearing of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel and the whole house of Benjamin.
²⁰So Abner and twenty men with him came to David at Hebron. And David made a feast for Abner and the men who were with him. ²¹Then Abner said to David, “I will arise and go, and ⚓gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may ⚓reign over all that your heart desires.” So David sent Abner away, and he went in peace.

Joab Murders Abner

²²At that moment the servants of David and Joab came from a raid and brought much spoil with them. But Abner was not with David in Hebron, for he had sent him away, and he had gone in peace. ²³When Joab and all the troops that were with him had come, they told Joab, saying, “Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he sent him away, and he has gone in peace.” ²⁴Then Joab came to the king and said, “What have you done? Look, Abner came to you; why is it that you sent him away, and he has already gone? ²⁵Surely you realize that Abner the son of Ner came to deceive you, to know ⚓your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you are doing.”
²⁶And when Joab had gone from David’s presence, he sent messengers after Abner, who brought him back from the well of Sirah. But David did not know it. ²⁷Now when Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab ⚓took him aside in the gate to speak with him privately, and there stabbed him ⚓in the stomach, so that he died for the blood of ⚓Asahel his brother.
²⁸Afterward, when David heard it, he said, “My kingdom and I are guiltless before the Lord forever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner. ²⁹⚓Let it rest on the head of Joab and on all his father’s house; and let there never fail to be in the house of Joab one ⚓who has a discharge or is a leper, who leans on a staff or falls by the sword, or who lacks bread.” ³⁰So Joab and Abishai his brother killed Abner, because he had killed their brother ⚓Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.

David’s Mourning for Abner

³¹Then David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, ⚓“Tear your clothes, ⚓gird yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn for Abner.” And King David followed the coffin. ³²So they buried Abner in Hebron; and the king lifted up his voice and wept at the grave of Abner, and all the people wept. ³³And the king sang a lament over Abner and said:
“Should Abner die as a ⚓fool dies?
³⁴Your hands were not bound
Nor your feet put into fetters;
As a man falls before wicked men, so you fell.”
Then all the people wept over him again.
³⁵And when all the people came ⚓to persuade David to eat food while it was still day, David took an oath, saying, ⚓“God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread or anything else ⚓till the sun goes down!” ³⁶Now all the people took note of it, and it pleased them, since whatever the king did pleased all the people. ³⁷For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it had not been the king’s intent to kill Abner the son of Ner. ³⁸Then the king said to his servants, “Do you not know that a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Israel? ³⁹And I am weak today, though anointed king; and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, ⚓are too harsh for me. ⚓The Lord shall repay the evildoer according to his wickedness.”
