Châm Ngôn Và Lời Cầu Nguyện Của A-gu-rơ

¹Các lời của A-gu-rơ, con trai Gia-kê;
Châm ngôn⚓ người ấy nói cùng Y-thi-ên,
Y-thi-ên và U-canh.⚓
²Thật, tôi ngu dại hơn người thường,
Và tôi không có sự sáng suốt như người thường.
³Tôi chưa học được sự khôn ngoan,
Cũng không có sự hiểu biết của Đấng Thánh.
⁴Ai đã lên trời rồi trở xuống?
Ai đã góp gió trong lòng bàn tay mình?
Ai đã bọc nước trong áo mình?
Ai đã lập các đầu cùng của đất?
Tên của người ấy là gì? Tên của con trai người ấy là chi?
Nếu ngươi biết?
⁵Mọi lời của Đức Chúa Trời đều tinh khiết;
Ngài là cái khiên cho những người trú ẩn nơi Ngài.
⁶Chớ thêm vào lời của Ngài;
E rằng Ngài sẽ quở trách ngươi và ngươi bị coi là kẻ nói dối.
⁷Hai điều con cầu xin Ngài;
Xin Ngài chớ từ chối trước khi con chết:
⁸Xin cho con cách xa gian xảo và dối trá;
Xin đừng cho con nghèo khổ hay giàu có,
Xin cho con đủ thực phẩm cần dùng.
⁹Kẻo khi dư thừa con sẽ từ khước Ngài
Mà bảo CHÚA là ai?
Hoặc khi nghèo khổ con đi ăn cắp
Và làm nhục danh Đức Chúa Trời con.
¹⁰Chớ nói xấu đầy tớ với chủ nó;
E rằng nó sẽ rủa sả con và con phải mắc tội.
¹¹Có loại người rủa cha mình,
Và không chúc phước mẹ mình.
¹²Có loại người cho rằng mình trong sạch;
Nhưng chưa được thanh tẩy sự dơ bẩn của mình.
¹³Có loại người mắt thật kiêu hãnh;
Mí mắt thật tự cao.
¹⁴Có loại người răng như lưỡi gươm,
Răng hàm như dao;
Chúng ăn nuốt người nghèo khổ trên đất
Và người cùng khốn giữa loài người.
¹⁵Con đỉa có hai con gái;
Chúng kêu lên: Hãy cho, hãy cho.
Có ba điều không bao giờ thỏa mãn;
Bốn điều không bao giờ nói: Đủ.
¹⁶Âm Phủ, dạ son sẻ,
Đất không bao giờ đủ nước,
Và lửa không bao giờ nói: Đủ rồi.
¹⁷Con mắt chế nhạo cha,
Khinh bỉ việc vâng lời mẹ,
Sẽ bị quạ nơi thung lũng móc mắt đi,
Và diều hâu ăn thịt.
¹⁸Có ba điều quá kỳ diệu cho tôi,
Bốn việc tôi không hiểu nỗi:
¹⁹Con đường của chim ưng bay trên trời;
Con đường của rắn bò trên đá;
Con đường tàu chạy giữa biển;
Và con đường một người nam phối hiệp với người nữ.
²⁰Đây là con đường của một phụ nữ ngoại tình:
Nàng ăn rồi chùi miệng
Và nói: tôi có làm gì tội lỗi đâu.
²¹Có ba điều làm trái đất rung chuyển
Và bốn điều nó không chịu nổi:
²²Một tên nô lệ lên làm vua;
Kẻ ngu có đầy dẫy thực phẩm;
²³Một người đàn bà đáng ghét lấy chồng,
Và một cô tớ gái thay thế bà chủ.
²⁴Có bốn vật nhỏ trên trái đất
Nhưng chúng cực kỳ khôn ngoan:
²⁵Kiến là loài không có sức mạnh,
Nhưng chúng dự trữ thực phẩm cho mình trong mùa hè.
²⁶Thỏ là loài sức yếu
Nhưng chúng làm ổ trong đá.
²⁷Cào cào không có vua
Nhưng tất cả đều tiến lên theo hàng lối.
²⁸Thằn lằn người ta có thể lấy tay bắt
Nhưng nó lại ở trong đền vua.
²⁹Có ba con vật có dáng đi đẹp,
Có bốn con vật có bước oai vệ:
³⁰Sư tử là loài dũng mãnh nhất giữa vòng các loài thú;
Nó không lùi bước trước một loài nào.
³¹Con gà trống vươn cao cổ, con dê đực;
Và vị vua khi thống lĩnh quân đội mình.
³²Nếu con dại dột tự tôn;
Nếu con âm mưu điều ác;
Hãy lấy tay bịt miệng lại.
³³Vì ép sữa làm ra bơ;
Bóp mũi ra máu;
Chọc giận sinh ra cãi lộn.

The Wisdom of Agur

¹The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, his utterance. This man declared to Ithiel—to Ithiel and Ucal:
²⚓Surely I am more stupid than any man,
And do not have the understanding of a man.
³I neither learned wisdom
Nor have ⚓knowledge of the Holy One.
⁴⚓Who has ascended into heaven, or descended?
⚓Who has gathered the wind in His fists?
Who has bound the waters in a garment?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is His name, and what is His Son’s name,
If you know?
⁵⚓Every word of God is pure;
⚓He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.
⁶⚓Do not add to His words,
Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.
⁷Two things I request of You
(Deprive me not before I die):
⁸Remove falsehood and lies far from me;
Give me neither poverty nor riches—
⚓Feed me with the food allotted to me;
⁹⚓Lest I be full and deny You,
And say, “Who is the Lord?”
Or lest I be poor and steal,
And profane the name of my God.
¹⁰Do not malign a servant to his master,
Lest he curse you, and you be found guilty.
¹¹There is a generation that curses its ⚓father,
And does not bless its mother.
¹²There is a generation ⚓that is pure in its own eyes,
Yet is not washed from its filthiness.
¹³There is a generation—oh, how ⚓lofty are their eyes!
And their eyelids are lifted up.
¹⁴⚓There is a generation whose teeth are like swords,
And whose fangs are like knives,
⚓To devour the poor from off the earth,
And the needy from among men.
¹⁵The leech has two daughters—
Give and Give!
There are three things that are never satisfied,
Four never say, “Enough!”:
¹⁶⚓The grave,
The barren womb,
The earth that is not satisfied with water—
And the fire never says, “Enough!”
¹⁷⚓The eye that mocks his father,
And scorns obedience to his mother,
The ravens of the valley will pick it out,
And the young eagles will eat it.
¹⁸There are three things which are too wonderful for me,
Yes, four which I do not understand:
¹⁹The way of an eagle in the air,
The way of a serpent on a rock,
The way of a ship in the midst of the sea,
And the way of a man with a virgin.
²⁰This is the way of an adulterous woman:
She eats and wipes her mouth,
And says, “I have done no wickedness.”
²¹For three things the earth is perturbed,
Yes, for four it cannot bear up:
²²⚓For a servant when he reigns,
A fool when he is filled with food,
²³A hateful woman when she is married,
And a maidservant who succeeds her mistress.
²⁴There are four things which are little on the earth,
But they are exceedingly wise:
²⁵⚓The ants are a people not strong,
Yet they prepare their food in the summer;
²⁶⚓The rock badgers are a feeble folk,
Yet they make their homes in the crags;
²⁷The locusts have no king,
Yet they all advance in ranks;
²⁸The spider skillfully grasps with its hands,
And it is in kings’ palaces.
²⁹There are three things which are majestic in pace,
Yes, four which are stately in walk:
³⁰A lion, which is mighty among beasts
And does not turn away from any;
³¹A greyhound,
A male goat also,
And a king whose troops are with him.
³²If you have been foolish in exalting yourself,
Or if you have devised evil, ⚓put your hand on your mouth.
³³For as the churning of milk produces butter,
And wringing the nose produces blood,
So the forcing of wrath produces strife.
