Giô-na-than chiến thắng

1Hôm sau, Giô-na-than, con Sau-lơ, bảo người trai trẻ mang khí giới của mình: "Đi với tôi qua bên đồn Phi-li-tin." Nhưng ông không cho cha mình hay. 2Lúc ấy, Sau-lơ và sáu trăm quân đang đóng ở ngoại ô thành Ghi-bê-a, dưới cây lựu ở Mi-gơ-rôn. 3Có thầy tế lễ đương nhiệm A-hi-gia ở đó (A-hi-gia làm chức tế lễ của Chúa tại Si-lô, vì là chắt của Hê-li, cháu nội của Phi-nê-a, con A-hi-túp, anh Y-ca-bốt). Không một người nào biết việc Giô-na-than đi sang đồn Phi-li-tin cả.
 4Trên đường đến đồn địch, Giô-na-than phải qua một cái đèo nằm giữa hai rặng núi đá dốc đứng tên là Bết-sốt và Sê-nê. 5Núi đá ở phía bắc đèo đối diện Mích-ma, còn núi phía nam đối diện Ghê-ba.
 6Giô-na-than nói với tráng sĩ mang khí giới mình: "Ta cố tiến đến đồn của những người vô tín kia. Mong rằng Chúa giúp chúng ta. Khi có Chúa cứu giúp thì số nhiều hay ít không thành vấn đề." 7Tráng sĩ đáp: "Xin cứ làm theo điều ông cho là phải. Tôi xin theo ông hết lòng." 8Giô-na-than tiếp: "Trước tiên ta sẽ để cho địch thấy ta. 9Nếu họ bảo ta dừng lại, ta đành thôi không tiến lên đánh họ nữa. 10Nhưng nếu họ gọi ta đến, ta sẽ tiến đánh, vì đây là dấu hiệu Chúa cho ta chiến thắng."
 11Khi hai người xuất đầu lộ diện, quân Phi-li-tin trong đồn la lên: "Có những người Hy-bá bò ra khỏi hang trú ẩn kia kìa!" 12Rồi họ lớn tiếng gọi hai người: "Lên đây, ta sẽ dạy cho cho các anh một bài học!" Giô-na-than bảo tráng sĩ mang khí giới: "Theo tôi leo lên! Chúa cho Y-sơ-ra-ên thắng họ rồi!" 13,14Vậy hai người dùng cả tay và chân để leo lên, và họ chém ngã chừng hai mươi người nằm la liệt trên một khoảnh đất rộng ước nửa mẫu. 15Sự kinh hoàng lan ra trong toàn thể quân Phi-li-tin, từ lính đóng đồn cho đến các đơn vị đột kích đều run sợ. Đồng thời, Thượng Đế làm một trận động đất dữ dội, nên họ càng khiếp đảm.
 16Lính trên vọng canh của Sau-lơ nhìn thấy cảnh quân địch chạy tới chạy lui hỗn loạn. 17Được tin này, Sau-lơ cho kiểm điểm quân sĩ xem ai đã xuất trại, và lúc ấy họ mới thấy thiếu Giô-na-than và người mang khí giới của ông. 18Sau-lơ bảo A-hi-gia đem Rương của Thượng Đế đến, vì lúc ấy Rương đang ở giữa người Y-sơ-ra-ên. 19Nhưng, trong khi Sau-lơ còn đang nói với thầy tế lễ, tiếng ồn ào từ đồn Phi-li-tin càng lúc càng tăng, nên Sau-lơ bảo thầy tế lễ ngưng lại.
 20Sau-lơ tập họp quân sĩ, kéo ra trận. Một cảnh hỗn loạn đập vào mắt ông: địch quân đang chém giết lẫn nhau. 21Những người Hy-bá bị địch chiêu dụ trước kia, đang ở trong đồn Phi-li-tin, nay chạy qua phía Sau-lơ và Giô-na than. 22Đồng thời, những người lánh nạn trên cao nguyên Ép-ra-im hay được tin quân Phi-li-tin vỡ chạy, liền cùng nhau đuổi đánh quân địch. 23Và như vậy, Chúa giải cứu Y-sơ-ra-ên hôm ấy, chiến trận lan ra cho đến Bết-a-ven.
 24-26Hôm ấy, quân sĩ Y-sơ-ra-ên bị kiệt sức vì một lời thề của Sau-lơ: "Từ nay cho đến tối, là khi ta trả thù xong quân địch, nếu ai ăn một vật gì, người ấy phải bị nguyền rủa." Vậy không ai dám ăn gì hết. Khi họ vào một cái rừng, thấy mật ong nhỏ giọt xuống đất cũng không dám đụng đến, vì sợ lời thề. 27Nhưng Giô-na-than không biết cha mình có buộc quân sĩ tôn trọng lời thề trên, nên ông chấm đầu gậy vào mật, đưa lên miệng, và mắt ông sáng lên. 28Một người ở đấy cho ông hay việc Sau-lơ thề nguyền rồi buộc quân sĩ giữ lời thề đó và không được ăn gì cả, nên mọi người phải đói lả. 29,30Giô-na-than nói: "Nhờ nếm tí mật này, tôi thấy tỉnh người. Nếu cha tôi không làm phiền mọi người, để họ tự do ăn những thức lấy được của địch, chiến thắng của quân ta hôm nay chắc chắn phải vĩ đại hơn nhiều."
 31Hôm ấy, mặc dù đói mệt, quân Y-sơ-ra-ên vẫn đánh giết địch nằm dài từ Mích-ma đến A-gia-lôn. 32Cuối cùng vì đói quá, họ xông vào bắt bò, cừu lấy được của địch, giết vội, ăn thịt chưa ráo máu. 33Có người báo cáo với Sau-lơ: "Quân ta phạm tội với Chúa, ăn thịt luôn với huyết." Sau-lơ nói: "Tội này nặng lắm!" Ông tiếp: "Lăn một khối đá lớn lại đây;" 34rồi cho người đi bảo quân sĩ khắp nơi: "Đem bò, cừu đến tảng đá này chọc tiết hẳn hoi rồi mới được ăn. Không được ăn thịt còn máu vì làm vậy là phạm tội với Chúa" ai nấy tuân lệnh. 35Sau-lơ xây một bàn thờ Chúa tại đấy. Đó là bàn thờ thứ nhất ông xây cho Ngài.
 36Sau đó, Sau-lơ đề nghị: "Ta nên đuổi theo quân Phi-li-tin suốt đêm nay, không để cho một tên nào sống sót." Quân sĩ tán thành: "Chúng tôi xin làm điều gì ông cho là phải." Nhưng thầy tế lễ nói: "Ta nên thỉnh ý Thượng Đế trước." 37Sau-lơ cầu hỏi Thượng Đế: "Chúng tôi nên đuổi theo người Phi-li-tin không? Ngài cho chúng tôi thắng họ không?" Nhưng Chúa không đáp lời. 38Thấy thế, Sau-lơ mời các vị lãnh đạo nhân dân đến tra cứu để tìm xem ai đã phạm tội hôm ấy. 39Ông nói: "Ta thề trước Chúa Hằng sống, Đấng cứu giúp Y-sơ-ra-ên, dù cho người phạm tội là Giô-na-than, con ta, người ấy cũng phải chết." Nhưng không một ai đáp lời ông cả.
 40Sau-lơ bảo mọi người: "Tất cả anh em đứng qua bên kia, còn ta và Giô-na-than đứng bên này." Mọi người làm theo lời vua. 41Sau-lơ cầu nguyện: "Lạy Thượng Đế Hằng Hữu của Y-sơ-ra-ên, xin dạy cho biết vì sao Ngài không trả lời con hôm nay? Do tội của con, của Giô-na-than, hay tội của anh em khác?" Sau-lơ và Giô-na-than bị chỉ định còn những người khác vô can. 42Sau-lơ lại cầu: "Xin chỉ định giữa con và Giô-na-than." Giô-na-than bị chỉ định.
 43Sau-lơ hỏi Giô-na-than: "Con đã làm điều gì?" Giô-na-than thưa: "Con đã nếm một chút mật trên đầu gậy. Con xin chịu chết." 44Sau-lơ nói: "Giô-na-than, con phải chết! Nếu không xin Thượng Đế phạt cha chết hay nặng hơn thế nữa." 45Nhưng quân sĩ lên tiếng phản đối: "Giô-na-than, vị anh hùng mang lại chiến thắng vĩ đại cho Y-sơ-ra-ên phải chết sao? Nhất định không! Chúng tôi thề trước Chúa Hằng Sống, Giô-na-than sẽ không mất một sợi tóc, vì chính ông ta thực hiện công việc của Thượng Đế hôm nay." Như thế, họ cứu mạng Giô-na-than. 46Sau-lơ bỏ ý định đuổi theo quân Phi-li-tin và nhờ vậy người Phi-li-tin chạy thoát về nhà.
 47Từ ngày lên làm vua Y-sơ-ra-ên, Sau-lơ chiến đấu với địch khắp bốn bề: quân Mô-áp, Am-môn, Ê-đôm, các vua Xô-ba, quân Phi-li-tin. Xuất quân phía nào vua dẹp yên phía ấy. 48Vua anh dũng chiến thắng quân A-ma-léc, và giải phóng Y-sơ-ra-ên khỏi ách thống trị hà khắc của các nước địch.
 49Sau-lơ có ba con trai là Giô-na-than, Ích-vi, Manh-ki-sua và hai con gái là Mê-ráp và Mi-canh. 50Vợ Sau-lơ là A-hi-nô-am, con gái A-hi-mát. Tổng tư lệnh quân đội là Áp-ne, anh em chú bác với vua. 51Kích, cha Sau-lơ và Nê-rơ, cha Áp-ne đều là con của A-bi-ên.
 52Cuộc chiến đấu với quân Phi-li-tin dai dẳng suốt đời Sau-lơ. Vì thế, gặp được người nào dũng mãnh, vua liền chiêu mộ ngay.

Jonathan Defeats the Philistines

 1Now it happened one day that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison that is on the other side.” But he did not tell his father. 2And Saul was sitting in the outskirts of ⚓Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron. The people who were with him were about six hundred men. 3⚓Ahijah the son of Ahitub, ⚓Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the Lord’s priest in Shiloh, was ⚓wearing an ephod. But the people did not know that Jonathan had gone.
  4Between the passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over ⚓to the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on one side and a sharp rock on the other side. And the name of one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh. 5The front of one faced northward opposite Michmash, and the other southward opposite Gibeah.
  6Then Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these ⚓uncircumcised; it may be that the Lord will work for us. For nothing restrains the Lord⚓from saving by many or by few.”
  7So his armorbearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Go then; here I am with you, according to your heart.”
  8Then Jonathan said, “Very well, let us cross over to these men, and we will show ourselves to them. 9If they say thus to us, ‘Wait until we come to you,’ then we will stand still in our place and not go up to them. 10But if they say thus, ‘Come up to us,’ then we will go up. For the Lord has delivered them into our hand, and ⚓this will be a sign to us.”
  11So both of them showed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said, “Look, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have ⚓hidden.” 12Then the men of the garrison called to Jonathan and his armorbearer, and said, “Come up to us, and we will show you something.”
 Jonathan said to his armorbearer, “Come up after me, for the Lord has delivered them into the hand of Israel.” 13And Jonathan climbed up on his hands and knees with his armorbearer after him; and they ⚓fell before Jonathan. And as he came after him, his armorbearer killed them. 14That first slaughter which Jonathan and his armorbearer made was about twenty men within about half an acre of land.
  15And ⚓there was trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. The garrison and ⚓the raiders also trembled; and the earth quaked, so that it was ⚓a very great trembling. 16Now the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and there was the multitude, melting away; and they ⚓went here and there. 17Then Saul said to the people who were with him, “Now call the roll and see who has gone from us.” And when they had called the roll, surprisingly, Jonathan and his armorbearer were not there. 18And Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the ark of God here” (for at that time the ark of God was with the children of Israel). 19Now it happened, while Saul ⚓talked to the priest, that the noise which was in the camp of the Philistines continued to increase; so Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.” 20Then Saul and all the people who were with him assembled, and they went to the battle; and indeed ⚓every man’s sword was against his neighbor, and there was very great confusion. 21Moreover the Hebrews who were with the Philistines before that time, who went up with them into the camp from the surrounding country, they also joined the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan. 22Likewise all the men of Israel who ⚓had hidden in the mountains of Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, they also followed hard after them in the battle. 23⚓So the Lord saved Israel that day, and the battle shifted ⚓to Beth Aven.

Saul’s Rash Oath

 24And the men of Israel were distressed that day, for Saul had ⚓placed the people under oath, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats any food until evening, before I have taken vengeance on my enemies.” So none of the people tasted food. 25⚓Now all the people of the land came to a forest; and there was ⚓honey on the ground. 26And when the people had come into the woods, there was the honey, dripping; but no one put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath. 27But Jonathan had not heard his father charge the people with the oath; therefore he stretched out the end of the rod that was in his hand and dipped it in a honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his countenance brightened. 28Then one of the people said, “Your father strictly charged the people with an oath, saying, ‘Cursed is the man who eats food this day.’ ” And the people were faint.
  29But Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. Look now, how my countenance has brightened because I tasted a little of this honey. 30How much better if the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies which they found! For now would there not have been a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?”
  31Now they had driven back the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. So the people were very faint. 32And the people rushed on the spoil, and took sheep, oxen, and calves, and slaughtered them on the ground; and the people ate them⚓with the blood. 33Then they told Saul, saying, “Look, the people are sinning against the Lord by eating with the blood!”
 So he said, “You have dealt treacherously; roll a large stone to me this day.” 34Then Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people, and say to them, ‘Bring me here every man’s ox and every man’s sheep, slaughter them here, and eat; and do not sin against the Lord by eating with the blood.’ ” So every one of the people brought his ox with him that night, and slaughtered it there. 35Then Saul ⚓built an altar to the Lord. This was the first altar that he built to the Lord.
  36Now Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and plunder them until the morning light; and let us not leave a man of them.”
 And they said, “Do whatever seems good to you.”
 Then the priest said, “Let us draw near to God here.”
  37So Saul ⚓asked counsel of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will You deliver them into the hand of Israel?” But ⚓He did not answer him that day. 38And Saul said, ⚓“Come over here, all you chiefs of the people, and know and see what this sin was today. 39For ⚓as the Lord lives, who saves Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But not a man among all the people answered him. 40Then he said to all Israel, “You be on one side, and my son Jonathan and I will be on the other side.”
 And the people said to Saul, “Do what seems good to you.”
  41Therefore Saul said to the Lord God of Israel, ⚓“Give a perfect lot.” ⚓So Saul and Jonathan were taken, but the people escaped. 42And Saul said, “Cast lots between my son Jonathan and me.” So Jonathan was taken. 43Then Saul said to Jonathan, ⚓“Tell me what you have done.”
 And Jonathan told him, and said, ⚓“I only tasted a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand. So now I must die!”
  44Saul answered, ⚓“God do so and more also; ⚓for you shall surely die, Jonathan.”
  45But the people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has accomplished this great deliverance in Israel? Certainly not! ⚓As the Lord lives, not one hair of his head shall fall to the ground, for he has worked ⚓with God this day.” So the people rescued Jonathan, and he did not die.
  46Then Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, and the Philistines went to their own place.

Saul’s Continuing Wars

 47So Saul established his sovereignty over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, against the people of ⚓Ammon, against Edom, against the kings of ⚓Zobah, and against the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he harassed them. 48And he gathered an army and ⚓attacked the Amalekites, and delivered Israel from the hands of those who plundered them.
  49⚓The sons of Saul were Jonathan, Jishui, and Malchishua. And the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger ⚓Michal. 50The name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. And the name of the commander of his army was Abner the son of Ner, Saul’s ⚓uncle. 51⚓Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.
  52Now there was fierce war with the Philistines all the days of Saul. And when Saul saw any strong man or any valiant man, ⚓he took him for himself.
