¹Thà nghèo mà sống đời thanh bạch,
Còn hơn giàu có cách bất lương.
²Hăng say mà vô ý thức,
Cũng hỏng việc như người quá vội vàng.
³Đường hư hỏng chính vì người điên dại,
Nhưng nó lại u mê oán hận Chân Thần!
⁴Khi giàu có thu hút nhiều bè bạn,
Lúc khốn cùng, bạn thiết cũng lánh xa.
⁵Nhân chứng gian chắc chắn mang hình phạt,
Người dối gạt không sao thoát lưới trời.
⁶Bậc cao quý được lắm người cầu cạnh,
Ai cũng ưa làm bạn với mạnh thường quân.⚓
⁷Khi nghèo ngặt, ruột thịt còn xa lánh,
Huống hồ là bè bạn thân sơ.
Muốn xin họ rủ lòng thương,
Họ lãng đâu mất, không đường tìm ra!
⁸Người khôn ngoan yêu mến linh hồn mình,
Người thông sáng tìm được nhiều phước hạnh.
⁹Nhân chứng gian lãnh hình phạt chắc chắn,
Người dối trá bị tiêu diệt chẳng sai.
¹⁰Kẻ ngu muội không đáng hưởng giàu sang phú quý,
Người nô lệ đâu dám lấn lướt bậc hoàng thần⚓.
¹¹Người khôn ngoan kìm hãm cơn giận dữ,
Kẻ khoan dung,⚓ thường được tiếng ngợi khen.
¹²Khi giận dữ, vua nạt nộ như sư tử rống,
Lúc hiền hòa, vua đổ ân huệ như sương móc trên đồng xanh.
¹³Con ngổ nghịch là tai họa cho cha,
Vợ mè nheo như nhà dột cho chồng.
¹⁴Tài sản do ông cha để lại,
Người vợ hiền do Thượng Đế ban cho.
¹⁵Vì biếng nhác mà người ta mê ngủ,
Vì ở dưng mà bụng đói xép ve.
¹⁶Ai giữ điều răn, giữ lấy linh hồn mình,
Ai bỏ đường Chúa chọn lấy cảnh diệt vong.
¹⁷Ai thương người nghèo, tức cho Thượng Đế vay mượn,
Và được Ngài ban thưởng chẳng sai.
¹⁸Sửa dạy con khi còn hy vọng,
Đừng để con sa chốn diệt vong.
¹⁹Người nóng tính sẽ mang hậu họa,
Ai giúp người, còn phải giúp liên miên.
²⁰Biết nghe lời khuyên răn chỉ giáo,
sẽ khôn ngoan suốt cả cuộc đời.
²¹Lòng con người lo bày mưu tính kế,
Nhưng thành tựu là do tay Thượng Đế.
²²Nhân hậu khiến mọi người mến phục,
Thà chịu nghèo còn hơn sống gian ngoan.
²³Kính sợ Thượng Đế là nguồn sự sống,
Làm thỏa lòng và ngăn cản họa tai.
²⁴Kẻ biếng nhác đặt tay mình vào đĩa,
Nhưng rồi thôi, không buồn để lên mồm.
²⁵Trừng phạt kẻ nhạo báng kẻ chon chất sẽ học khôn,
Trách cứ người thông sáng, thông sáng người gia tăng.
²⁶Hành hung cha và xô đuổi mẹ,
Là con làm điếm nhục gia phong.
²⁷Con ơi, chớ nên nghe tà thuyết,
Để con không lạc lối lầm đường.
²⁸Nhân chứng gian nhạo cười công lý,
Miệng ác nhân ăn nuốt tội ô.
²⁹Hình phạt để dành cho kẻ nhạo báng,
Roi vọt sắm sẵn cho người khùng điên.

¹Better ⚓is the poor who walks in his integrity
Than one who is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.
²Also it is not good for a soul to be without knowledge,
And he sins who hastens with his feet.
³The foolishness of a man twists his way,
And his heart frets against the Lord.
⁴⚓Wealth makes many friends,
But the poor is separated from his friend.
⁵A ⚓false witness will not go unpunished,
And he who speaks lies will not escape.
⁶Many entreat the favor of the nobility,
And every man is a friend to one who gives gifts.
⁷⚓All the brothers of the poor hate him;
How much more do his friends go ⚓far from him!
He may pursue them with words, yet they abandon him.
⁸He who gets wisdom loves his own soul;
He who keeps understanding ⚓will find good.
⁹A false witness will not go unpunished,
And he who speaks lies shall perish.
¹⁰Luxury is not fitting for a fool,
Much less ⚓for a servant to rule over princes.
¹¹⚓The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger,
⚓And his glory is to overlook a transgression.
¹²⚓The king’s wrath is like the roaring of a lion,
But his favor is⚓like dew on the grass.
¹³⚓A foolish son is the ruin of his father,
⚓And the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping.
¹⁴⚓Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers,
But ⚓a prudent wife is from the Lord.
¹⁵⚓Laziness casts one into a deep sleep,
And an idle person will ⚓suffer hunger.
¹⁶⚓He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul,
But he who is careless of his ways will die.
¹⁷⚓He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord,
And He will pay back what he has given.
¹⁸⚓Chasten your son while there is hope,
And do not set your heart on his destruction.
¹⁹A man of great wrath will suffer punishment;
For if you rescue him, you will have to do it again.
²⁰Listen to counsel and receive instruction,
That you may be wise ⚓in your latter days.
²¹There are many plans in a man’s heart,
⚓Nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand.
²²What is desired in a man is kindness,
And a poor man is better than a liar.
²³⚓The fear of the Lordleads to life,
And he who has it will abide in satisfaction;
He will not be visited with evil.
²⁴⚓A lazy man buries his hand in the bowl,
And will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.
²⁵Strike a scoffer, and the simple ⚓will become wary;
⚓Rebuke one who has understanding, and he will discern knowledge.
²⁶He who mistreats his father and chases away his mother
Is⚓a son who causes shame and brings reproach.
²⁷Cease listening to instruction, my son,
And you will stray from the words of knowledge.
²⁸A disreputable witness scorns justice,
And ⚓the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity.
²⁹Judgments are prepared for scoffers,
⚓And beatings for the backs of fools.
