Âm mưu giết Chúa
1Đã gần đến lễ Vượt qua, — trong ngày lễ này người Do-thái chỉ ăn bánh không pha men—
2các thầy trưởng tế và thầy dạy luật tìm cách thủ tiêu Chúa Giê-xu, vì họ sợ dân chúng.
Giu-đa phản Chúa
3Quỷ Sa-tan nhập vào sứ đồ Giu-đa Ích-ca-ri-ốt.
4Giu-đa tìm gặp các thầy trưởng tế và các viên chỉ huy lính gác Đền thờ để bàn mưu bắt Chúa Giê-xu.
5Họ mừng lắm, hứa sẽ thưởng tiền.
6Từ đó, Giu-đa tìm cơ hội nộp Chúa lúc không có dân chúng ở gần Ngài.
Chuẩn bị lễ Vượt qua
7Đến ngày lễ Vượt qua, người Do-thái giết chiên con để ăn với bánh không men.
8Chúa Giê-xu sai Phê-rơ và Giăng đi chuẩn bị bữa tiệc cho Ngài và các sứ đồ.
9Họ hỏi: “Thưa Thầy, chúng con sẽ dọn tiệc tại đâu?”
10Chúa Giê-xu đáp: “Khi các con vào thành phố, sẽ gặp một người xách vò nước. Người ấy vào nhà nào, các con cứ theo vào,
11nói với chủ nhà: ‘Thầy hỏi: Phòng khách dành riêng cho ta và các môn đệ ăn lễ Vượt qua ở đâu?
12Chủ nhà sẽ chỉ cho các con một phòng rộng trên lầu đầy đủ tiện nghi. Các con dọn tiệc tại đó.”
13Họ ra đi gặp mọi điều đúng như lời Chúa dạy và chuẩn bị lễ Vượt qua.
Tiệc thánh đầu tiên
14Đến giờ dự lễ, Chúa Giê-xu ngồi ăn với các sứ đồ.
15Chúa bảo họ: “Ta rất muốn dự lễ Vượt qua này với các con trước khi chịu khổ nạn.
16Ta cho các con biết: Ta sẽ không dự tiệc này nữa cho đến khi mục đích bữa tiệc được hoàn thành⚓ trong Nước của Thượng Đế.”
17Chúa lấy chén nước nho tạ ân Thượng Đế và bảo: “Các con cầm chén này chia nhau uống đi.
18Vì từ nay, ta sẽ không uống nước nho này nữa cho đến khi Nước Trời được thể hiện.”
19Ngài lấy bánh, tạ ân Thượng Đế, bẻ ra trao cho các môn đệ: “Đây là thân thể ta, phải hy sinh vì các con. Các con hãy ăn để tưởng niệm ta.”
20Cũng thế, sau bữa ăn, Chúa cầm chén nước nho và bảo: “Chén này là giao ước mới giữa Thượng Đế và nhân loại, ấn chứng bằng máu ta, máu phải đổ ra vì các con.
21Nhưng này, kẻ phản ta đang ngồi ăn chung với ta.
22Ta phải hy sinh⚓ đúng theo chương trình Thượng Đế, nhưng khốn cho kẻ phản ta!”
23Các môn đệ hỏi nhau ai là người phản Chúa.
Người lãnh đạo
24Các môn đệ tranh luận với nhau xem ai lớn nhất trong Nước Trời.
25Chúa Giê-xu dạy: “Vua chúa các dân tộc nước ngoài cai trị rất tàn ác; người áp bức nhân dân lại được gọi là ân nhân.
26Nhưng giữa các con, ai muốn làm lớn phải chịu phận nhỏ, ai muốn lãnh đạo phải làm tôi tớ.
27Lệ thường, tôi tớ phải hầu hạ chủ. Trái lại, ta vẫn hầu hạ các con.
28Vì các con trung thành với ta trong những ngày thử thách
29và vì Cha đã ủy quyền cai trị cho ta, nên ta cũng cho các con quyền đó.
30Các con sẽ được ăn uống chung bàn với ta trong Nước ta và ngồi trên ngai xét xử mười hai đại tộc Y-sơ-ra-ên.”
Chúa cảnh cáo Phê-rơ
31Chúa Giê-xu tiết lộ cho Phê-rơ: “Si-môn, Si-môn, Sa-tan đã xin phép thử thách con như người ta sàng sảy lúa,
32nhưng ta đã cầu nguyện cho con khỏi thiếu đức tin. Sau khi con ăn năn, hãy gây dựng đức tin cho anh em con!”
33Phê-rơ đáp: “Thưa Thầy, con sẵn sàng ngồi tù, chịu chết với Thầy!”
34Nhưng Chúa bảo: “Phê-rơ ơi, ta cho con biết, trước khi gà gáy đêm nay, con sẽ chối ta ba lần.”
Chuẩn bị sẵn sàng
35Chúa hỏi các môn đệ: “Khi ta sai các con đi truyền giáo, không mang theo tiền bạc, túi bao hay giày dép, các con có thiếu thốn gì không?” Họ đáp: “Thưa không!”
36Chúa tiếp: “Nhưng bây giờ lại khác. Ai có tiền bạc hay túi bao, cứ mang theo. Ai không có gươm, nên bán áo choàng mà mua.
37Vì lời tiên tri này sắp ứng nghiệm: ‘Người sẽ bị kể vào hàng phạm nhân’ phải, các lời tiên tri nói về ta đều sẽ ứng nghiệm.”
38Các môn đệ báo cáo: “Thưa Thầy, chúng con có hai thanh gươm đây.” Chúa đáp: “Đủ rồi!”
Chúa cầu nguyện
39Rời phòng tiệc, Chúa Giê-xu lên núi Ô-liu như thường lệ. Các môn đệ đi theo Ngài.
40Đến nơi, Ngài bảo: “Các con phải cầu nguyện để khỏi bị cám dỗ.”
41Rồi Chúa đi một quãng chừng vài chục thước,⚓ quỳ xuống cầu nguyện:
42“Thưa Cha, nếu Cha vui lòng, xin cho Con khỏi uống chén này. Nhưng xin ý Cha được thực hiện, chứ không theo ý Con.”
43Lúc ấy, một thiên sứ đến thêm sức cho Ngài.
44Trong lúc đau đớn thống khổ, Chúa cầu nguyện càng tha thiết, mồ hôi toát ra như những giọt máu nhỏ xuống đất.
45Cầu nguyện xong, Chúa đứng lên, trở lại với các môn đệ. Thấy họ đang ngủ vì quá buồn rầu,
46Chúa gọi: “Sao các con ngủ? Hãy thức dậy cầu nguyện để khỏi bị cám dỗ.”
Chúa Giê-xu bị bắt
47Chúa còn đang nói, một đám đông kéo tới, do Giu-đa dẫn đường. Giu-đa trân tráo tới gần hôn Chúa.
48Nhưng Chúa trách: “Giu-đa! con lấy cái hôn để phản ta⚓ sao?”
49Các môn đệ đứng gần biết nguy cơ đã tới, liền hỏi: “Thưa Chúa, chúng con nên cầm gươm chiến đấu không?”
50Một môn đệ vung gươm chém đứt vành tai phải của đầy tớ thầy Tế lễ tối cao.
51Nhưng Chúa ngăn lại: “Đừng đánh chém nữa!” Rồi Ngài đặt tay chữa lành tai người đầy tớ.
52Chúa Giê-xu hỏi các thầy trưởng tế, các viên chỉ huy lính gác Đền thờ và các trưởng lão: “Tôi đâu phải trộm cướp mà các ông cầm gươm dao, gậy gộc đến bắt?
53Hằng ngày tôi vẫn ở với các ông trong Đền thờ, sao các ông không bắt tôi? Nhưng nay đã đến giờ của quyền lực tối tăm, giờ các ông hành động.”
Phê-rơ chối Chúa
54Người Do-thái bắt Chúa giải đến dinh thầy Tế lễ tối cao, Phê-rơ theo sau Chúa xa xa.
55Họ nhóm một đống lửa ngoài sân rồi ngồi lại sưởi, Phê-rơ len vào ngồi với họ.
56Một đầy tớ gái thấy ông bên đống lửa liền nhìn mặt: “Anh này là đồ đệ⚓ của Giê-xu!”
57Nhưng Phê- rơ chối: “Chị ơi, tôi không biết ông ấy đâu!”
58Một lúc sau, người khác thấy Phê-rơ liền nói: “Anh cũng thuộc bọn đó!” Phê-rơ cãi: “Không phải đâu!”
59Chừng một giờ sau, người khác nữa quả quyết: “Đúng rồi! Anh này là đồ đệc của Giê-xu, vì cũng là người Ga-li-lê!”
60Nhưng Phê-rơ lại chối: “Ông ơi, tôi không hiểu ông nói gì hết!” Ngay lúc ấy, có tiếng gà gáy.
61Chúa Giê-xu quay lại nhìn Phê-rơ. Chợt nhớ lời Chúa: ‘Trước khi gà gáy đêm nay, con sẽ chối ta ba lần’,
62Phê-rơ bước ra ngoài khóc lóc đắng cay.
Chúa bị sỉ nhục
63,64Bọn người canh giữ Chúa bắt đầu chế giễu, đánh đập Ngài. Chúng bịt mắt, đấm Ngài rồi hỏi: “Thử đoán xem ai vừa đánh anh đó?”
65Chúng sỉ nhục Ngài đủ điều.
Chúa ra trước Hội đồng Quốc gia Do-thái
66Sáng sớm hôm sau. Hội đồng Quốc gia được triệu tập, gồm các trưởng lão, các thầy trưởng tế và dạy luật. Chúa Giê-xu bị giải ra trước Hội đồng. Họ chất vấn:
67“Anh có phải là Chúa Cứu Thế không?” Chúa đáp: “Dù tôi nói, các ông cũng không tin,
68tôi hỏi, các ông cũng không trả lời.
69Nhưng từ nay, tôi⚓ sẽ ngồi bên phải ngai quyền năng của Thượng Đế.”
70Cả Hội đồng đều hỏi: “Vậy anh là Con Thượng Đế sao?” Chúa đáp: “Đúng thế!”
71Họ bảo nhau: “Chúng ta cằn gì nhân chứng nữa, vì chính miệng nó đã khai ra rồi!”

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
1Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,
2and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people.
3Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve.
4And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus.
5They were delighted and agreed to give him money.
6He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.
The Last Supper
7Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.
8Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”
9“Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.
10He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters,
11and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’
12He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”
13They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
14When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table.
15And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
16For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”
17After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you.
18For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
20In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.⚓
21But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.
22The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!”
23They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.
24A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.
25Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors.
26But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.
27For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
28You are those who have stood by me in my trials.
29And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me,
30so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat.
32But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
33But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”
34Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”
35Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?”
“Nothing,” they answered.
36He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.
37It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’⚓; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”
38The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”
“That’s enough!” he replied.
Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives
39Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.
40On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”
41He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,
42“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”
43An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.
44And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.⚓
45When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow.
46“Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
Jesus Arrested
47While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him,
48but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”
50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
51But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs?
53Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour—when darkness reigns.”
Peter Disowns Jesus
54Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance.
55And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them.
56A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”
57But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.
58A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”
“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.
59About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”
60Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed.
61The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”
62And he went outside and wept bitterly.
The Guards Mock Jesus
63The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him.
64They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?”
65And they said many other insulting things to him.
Jesus Before Pilate and Herod
66At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them.
67“If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.”
Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me,
68and if I asked you, you would not answer.
69But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”
70They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”
He replied, “You say that I am.”
71Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”
