¹Chớ khoe khoang về ngày mai
Vì ai biết được việc tương lai?
²Đừng tự khen mình, để việc ấy cho người khác làm.
³Sự nóng giận của kẻ dại nặng hơn cả đá và cát.
⁴Người căm hờn là tàn ác và hung tợn,
Nhưng người ghen tương còn nguy hiểm hơn.
⁵Ra mặt quở trách hơn là yêu thương lặng lẽ.
⁶Bạn gây thương tích hơn là địch thù hôn hít.
⁷Khi no chê cả mật,
Lúc đói đắng hóa ngọt.
⁸Người xa nhà như chim lìa tổ.
⁹Lời khuyên nhủ chân tình như dầu thơm ngào ngạt.
¹⁰Chớ từ bỏ bạn - dù bạn mình hay bạn của cha -
Lúc hoạn nạn đừng lo đi kiếm anh em họ hàng,
Vì láng giềng gần hơn họ hàng ở xa.
¹¹Con ơi, nếu con khôn ngoan, lòng cha sung sướng,
Vì cha đáp được những lời mắng vốn tổn thương.
¹²Người khôn tránh né nguy nan,
Kẻ dại đâm đầu hướng tới họa tai.
¹³Phải nắm lấy áo ai bảo lãnh người xa lạ,
Nhất là bảo lãnh cho phụ nữ nhẹ dạ.
¹⁴La to chúc phước bạn lúc sớm mai,
Bạn coi câu chúc như nguyền rủa họa tai.

Cũng tệ như người đàn bà cãi cọ,
Bịt miệng nàng, khác chi đưa tay cản gió,
Ngửa tay đựng dầu cũng khó như nhau.
¹⁷Sắt mài sắt,
Bạn rèn bạn.
¹⁸Săn sóc cây vả được ăn quả nó;
Phục vụ hết lòng, chủ thưởng công cho.
¹⁹Nước phản chiếu khuôn mặt,
Tấm lòng biểu lộ chân tướng con người.
²⁰Mắt đầy tham vọng, chẳng hề chán;
Âm ty nuốt người không hề thỏa mãn.
²¹Lửa dùng thử bạc, thử vàng,
Lời khen câu tán thử đo con người.
²²Dùng chày dã kẻ dại như dã thóc,
Ngu si nó cũng không tróc đi đâu.
^23-27Vì giàu có chóng qua, ngôi nước chẳng trường tồn,
Nên con phải chịu khó chăm nom bầy súc vật;
Lấy lông cừu con làm áo xống,
Với sữa dê cả nhà có thực phẩm dư dật;
Bán bớt súc vật con tạo thêm ruộng đất,
Làm sạch cỏ khô, mùa màng mọc lên xanh cánh đồng,
Thảo mộc um tùm phủ khắp núi non.

¹Do⚓ not boast about tomorrow,
For you do not know what a day may bring forth.
²⚓Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth;
A stranger, and not your own lips.
³A stone is heavy and sand is weighty,
But a fool’s wrath is heavier than both of them.
⁴Wrath is cruel and anger a torrent,
But ⚓who is able to stand before jealousy?
⁵⚓Open rebuke is better
Than love carefully concealed.
⁶Faithful are the wounds of a friend,
But the kisses of an enemy are⚓deceitful.
⁷A satisfied soul loathes the honeycomb,
But to a hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
⁸Like a bird that wanders from its nest
Is a man who wanders from his place.
⁹Ointment and perfume delight the heart,
And the sweetness of a man’s friend gives delight by hearty counsel.
¹⁰Do not forsake your own friend or your father’s friend,
Nor go to your brother’s house in the day of your calamity;
⚓Better is a neighbor nearby than a brother far away.
¹¹My son, be wise, and make my heart glad,
⚓That I may answer him who reproaches me.
¹²A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself;
The simple pass on and are ⚓punished.
¹³Take the garment of him who is surety for a stranger,
And hold it in pledge when he is surety for a seductress.
¹⁴He who blesses his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning,
It will be counted a curse to him.
¹⁵A ⚓continual dripping on a very rainy day
And a contentious woman are alike;
¹⁶Whoever restrains her restrains the wind,
And grasps oil with his right hand.
¹⁷As iron sharpens iron,
So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
¹⁸⚓Whoever keeps the fig tree will eat its fruit;
So he who waits on his master will be honored.
¹⁹As in water face reflects face,
So a man’s heart reveals the man.
²⁰⚓Hell and Destruction are never full;
So ⚓the eyes of man are never satisfied.
²¹⚓The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold,
And a man is valued by what others say of him.
²²⚓Though you grind a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with crushed grain,
Yet his foolishness will not depart from him.
²³Be diligent to know the state of your ⚓flocks,
And attend to your herds;
²⁴For riches are not forever,
Nor does a crown endure to all generations.
²⁵⚓When the hay is removed, and the tender grass shows itself,
And the herbs of the mountains are gathered in,
²⁶The lambs will provide your clothing,
And the goats the price of a field;
²⁷You shall have enough goats’ milk for your food,
For the food of your household,
And the nourishment of your maidservants.
