Người Lê-vi
1Vào những ngày Chúa Hằng Hữu phán dạy Mai-sen trên núi Si-nai, con cháu của A-rôn và Mai-sen gồm có:
2con trưởng nam của A-rôn là Na-đáp; các con kế là A-bi-hu, Ê-lê-a-sa và Y-tha-ma.
3Họ là những người được xức dầu thánh để giữ chức thầy tế lễ và phục vụ trong Lều hội kiến.
4Vì Na-đáp và A-bi-hu chết trước mặt Chúa khi họ dâng lửa lạ trong sa mạc Si-nai, không để lại con cái, nên Ê-lê-a-sa và Y-tha-ma được làm thầy tế lễ phụ tá cho A-rôn, cha họ.
5Chúa Hằng Hữu bảo Mai-sen: "Hãy triệu tập đại tộc Lê-vi cho họ trình diện A-rôn để nhận công tác.
6-9Dưới sự hướng dẫn của A-rôn, họ sẽ thay mặt toàn dân thi hành thánh chức trong Đền Chúa. Họ cũng có nhiệm vụ quản lý và phục dịch trong Đền và bảo trì mọi vật dụng trong Lều hội kiến. Con sẽ đặt toàn thể đại tộc Lê-vi dưới quyền A-rôn và các con người, vì người Lê-vi là đại biểu của nhân dân.
10Còn A-rôn và các con người sẽ thi hành chức vụ tế lễ. Không một ai ngoài họ được xen vào chức vụ này; ai bất tuân sẽ bị xử tử."
11Chúa Hằng Hữu cũng bảo Mai-sen:
12“Người Lê-vi thuộc về Ta, Ta chấp nhận họ thay thế cho các con đầu lòng của toàn dân Y-sơ-ra-ên,
13vì tất cả các con đầu lòng thuộc về Ta. Vào ngày Ta đoán phạt các con đầu lòng Ai-cập, Ta đã dành các con đầu lòng Y-sơ-ra-ên cho Ta, cả người lẫn gia súc. Ta là Chúa Hằng Hữu."
14Chúa Hằng Hữu cũng có dặn Mai-sen trong sa mạc Si-nai:
15“Hãy kiểm tra dân số đại tộc Lê-vi theo thứ tự gia đình, tất cả nam giới từ trẻ sơ sinh một tháng trở lên."
16Mai-sen vâng lời Chúa, kiểm tra con cháu Lê-vi.
17Các con trai Lê-vi là Ghẹt-sôn, Kê-hát và Mê-ra-ri.
18Con trai Ghẹt-sôn là Líp-ni và Si-mê-y.
19Con trai Kê-hát là Am-ram, Y-sa, Hếp-rôn và U-xi-ên.
20Con trai Mê-ra-ri là Mác-li và Mu-si.
21Gia tộc Ghẹt-sôn gồm hai gia đình là Líp-ni và Si-mê-y.
22Số người từ một tháng trở lên cộng được 7.500.
23,24Gia tộc Ghẹt-sôn do Ê-li-a-sáp con La-ên chỉ huy, cắm trại sau Lều hội kiến, về phía tây.
25,26Họ chịu trách nhiệm về nóc Đền tạm, tấm màn che cửa Lều hội kiến, màn bọc hành lang, màn che cửa hành lang chung quanh Đền tạm, bàn thờ và các dây thừng buộc Đền tạm.
27Gia tộc Kê-hát: gồm bốn gia đình là A-ram, Y-sa, Hếp-rôn và U-xi-ên.
28Tổng số người từ một tháng trở lên kiểm tra được là 8.600.
29,30Gia tộc Kê-hát do Ê-li-sa-phan chỉ huy, sẽ cắm trại phía nam Đền tạm.
31Họ chịu trách nhiệm về Rương giao ước, cái bàn, chân đèn, các bàn thờ, các dụng cụ dùng trong Đền thánh và bức màn.
32Các công tác phục vụ trong Đền thánh này đều do các gia tộc phụ trách và gia trưởng điều khiển, nhưng tất cả đều đặt dưới quyền giám sát của thầy tế lễ Ê-lê-ê-sa, con A-rôn.
33Gia tộc Mê-ra-ri gồm hai gia đình Mác-li và Mu-si.
34Số người từ một tháng trở lên cộng được 6.200.
35Gia tộc Mê-ra-ri do Su-ri-ên chỉ huy, cắm trại phía bắc Lều hội kiến.
36,37Họ chịu trách nhiệm về khung Lều hội kiến, thanh ngang, trụ, lỗ trụ, và các đồ phụ tùng, trụ chung quanh hành lang, lỗ trụ, móc và dây.
38Phía đông tức là phía trước Đền tạm và Lều hội kiến chỉ có Mai-sen, A-rôn và các con người được cắm trại, vì họ có trách nhiệm phục vụ trong Đền thánh, lo việc tế lễ cho nhân dân - Bất kỳ ai khác đến cắm trại tại khu này sẽ bị xử tử.
39Tổng kết cuộc kiểm tra đại tộc Lê-vi (do Mai-sen và A-rôn thực hiện theo lời Chúa dạy) là 22.000 người, gồm nam giới từ một tháng trở lên.
40Chúa Hằng Hữu lại bảo Mai-sen: "Bây giờ con kiểm tra tất cả các con trưởng nam của người Y-sơ-ra-ên, từ một tháng trở lên, đăng ký tên từng người.
41Tuy nhiên, con sẽ lấy người Lê-vi thay thế các con trưởng nam này cho Ta. Súc vật cũng vậy, lấy súc vật của người Lê-vi thay thế cho súc vật đầu lòng của người Y-sơ-ra-ên."
42Vậy Mai-sen kiểm tra các con trưởng nam của người Y-sơ-ra-ên, như Chúa bảo ông.
43Tổng số con trưởng nam từ một tháng trở lên đăng ký tên từng người, là 22.273.
44Chúa Hằng Hữu bảo Mai-sen:
45“Người Lê-vi được dành cho Ta, 22.000 người Lê-vi thay cho các con trưởng nam Y-sơ-ra-ên, và súc vật của người Lê-vi thay cho súc vật đầu lòng của người Y-sơ-ra-ên. Người Lê-vi sẽ thuộc về Ta. Ta là Chúa Hằng Hữu.
46-48Đối với số 273 người con đầu lòng của dân Y-sơ-ra-ên thặng dư (so với số người Lê-vi), mỗi người phải trả một khoản tiền chuộc là năm lạng bạc,⚓ theo cân Nơi thánh.⚓ Con sẽ thu số tiền này rồi đem giao cho A-rôn và các con người."
49,50Vậy, Mai-sen thu số tiền chuộc của 273 người này, cộng được 1.365 lạng bạc⚓ theo cân Nơi thánh.
51Theo lời Chúa dạy, Mai-sen đem số tiền này giao cho các con A-rôn.

The Levites
1This is the account of the family of Aaron and Moses at the time the Lord spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai.
2The names of the sons of Aaron were Nadab the firstborn and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
3Those were the names of Aaron’s sons, the anointed priests, who were ordained to serve as priests.
4Nadab and Abihu, however, died before the Lord when they made an offering with unauthorized fire before him in the Desert of Sinai. They had no sons, so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aaron.
5The Lord said to Moses,
6“Bring the tribe of Levi and present them to Aaron the priest to assist him.
7They are to perform duties for him and for the whole community at the tent of meeting by doing the work of the tabernacle.
8They are to take care of all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, fulfilling the obligations of the Israelites by doing the work of the tabernacle.
9Give the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to him.⚓
10Appoint Aaron and his sons to serve as priests; anyone else who approaches the sanctuary is to be put to death.”
11The Lord also said to Moses,
12“I have taken the Levites from among the Israelites in place of the first male offspring of every Israelite woman. The Levites are mine,
13for all the firstborn are mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set apart for myself every firstborn in Israel, whether human or animal. They are to be mine. I am the Lord.”
14The Lord said to Moses in the Desert of Sinai,
15“Count the Levites by their families and clans. Count every male a month old or more.”
16So Moses counted them, as he was commanded by the word of the Lord.
17These were the names of the sons of Levi:
Gershon, Kohath and Merari.
18These were the names of the Gershonite clans:
Libni and Shimei.
19The Kohathite clans:
Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel.
20The Merarite clans:
Mahli and Mushi.
These were the Levite clans, according to their families.
21To Gershon belonged the clans of the Libnites and Shimeites; these were the Gershonite clans.
22The number of all the males a month old or more who were counted was 7,500.
23The Gershonite clans were to camp on the west, behind the tabernacle.
24The leader of the families of the Gershonites was Eliasaph son of Lael.
25At the tent of meeting the Gershonites were responsible for the care of the tabernacle and tent, its coverings, the curtain at the entrance to the tent of meeting,
26the curtains of the courtyard, the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard surrounding the tabernacle and altar, and the ropes—and everything related to their use.
27To Kohath belonged the clans of the Amramites, Izharites, Hebronites and Uzzielites; these were the Kohathite clans.
28The number of all the males a month old or more was 8,600.⚓ The Kohathites were responsible for the care of the sanctuary.
29The Kohathite clans were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle.
30The leader of the families of the Kohathite clans was Elizaphan son of Uzziel.
31They were responsible for the care of the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the articles of the sanctuary used in ministering, the curtain, and everything related to their use.
32The chief leader of the Levites was Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest. He was appointed over those who were responsible for the care of the sanctuary.
33To Merari belonged the clans of the Mahlites and the Mushites; these were the Merarite clans.
34The number of all the males a month old or more who were counted was 6,200.
35The leader of the families of the Merarite clans was Zuriel son of Abihail; they were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle.
36The Merarites were appointed to take care of the frames of the tabernacle, its crossbars, posts, bases, all its equipment, and everything related to their use,
37as well as the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their bases, tent pegs and ropes.
38Moses and Aaron and his sons were to camp to the east of the tabernacle, toward the sunrise, in front of the tent of meeting. They were responsible for the care of the sanctuary on behalf of the Israelites. Anyone else who approached the sanctuary was to be put to death.
39The total number of Levites counted at the Lord’s command by Moses and Aaron according to their clans, including every male a month old or more, was 22,000.
40The Lord said to Moses, “Count all the firstborn Israelite males who are a month old or more and make a list of their names.
41Take the Levites for me in place of all the firstborn of the Israelites, and the livestock of the Levites in place of all the firstborn of the livestock of the Israelites. I am the Lord.”
42So Moses counted all the firstborn of the Israelites, as the Lord commanded him.
43The total number of firstborn males a month old or more, listed by name, was 22,273.
44The Lord also said to Moses,
45“Take the Levites in place of all the firstborn of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites in place of their livestock. The Levites are to be mine. I am the Lord.
46To redeem the 273 firstborn Israelites who exceed the number of the Levites,
47collect five shekels⚓ for each one, according to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs twenty gerahs.
48Give the money for the redemption of the additional Israelites to Aaron and his sons.”
49So Moses collected the redemption money from those who exceeded the number redeemed by the Levites.
50From the firstborn of the Israelites he collected silver weighing 1,365 shekels,⚓ according to the sanctuary shekel.
51Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons, as he was commanded by the word of the Lord.
