^1,2Một ngày thứ bảy,⚓ Chúa Giê-xu dự tiệc tại nhà một lãnh tụ phái Biệt-lập. Trước mặt Ngài có người bị bệnh phù, các thày dạy luật và Biệt-lập chăm chú theo dõi, xem Ngài có chữa bệnh cho người ấy không.
³Chúa Giê-xu hỏi: “Chữa bệnh trong ngày thứ bảy có hợp pháp không?”
⁴Nhưng họ không trà lời. Chúa nắm tay người bệnh, chữa lành rồi cho về. ⁵Chúa hỏi các thầy dạy luật và Biệt-lập: “Ngày thứ bảy, nếu bò lừa của các ông chẳng may té xuống hố, các ông không kẻo nó lên sao?”
⁶Họ không trả lời gì được.

Khiêm tốn

⁷Chúa Giê-xu để ý thấy nhiều người khách muốn ngồi chỗ danh dự đầu bàn, nên Ngài khuyên: ⁸“Khi được mời dự tiệc cưới, các ông đừng ngồi chỗ danh dự. Vì nếu có người quan trọng hơn các ông cũng được mời, ⁹chủ sẽ đưa họ đến và bảo các ông nhường chỗ. Lúc ấy các ông sẽ hổ thẹn xuống ngồi tận cuối bàn.
¹⁰“Vậy các ông nên chọn chỗ thấp nhất, chủ nhà trông thấy sẽ mời lên chỗ tốt hơn. Các ông sẽ được vinh dự trước mặt quan khách. ¹¹Vì ai tự đề cao sẽ bị hạ xuống, còn ai hạ mình sẽ được nâng cao.”
¹²Chúa quay sang chủ nhà: “Khi đãi tiệc, ông đừng mời bạn hữu, anh em, bà con, hay láng giềng giàu có, vì họ sẽ mời ông để đáp lễ. ¹³Trái lại, nên mời người nghèo khổ, tàn tật, đui què, ¹⁴ông sẽ được Thượng Đế ban phúc. Đến kỳ người công chính sống lại, Ngài sẽ khen thưởng, vì ông đã mời những người không thể mời lại mình.”

Ngụ ngôn “Tiệc lớn”

¹⁵Nghe Chúa dạy, một thực khách lên tiếng: “Phúc cho người được dự tiệc trong Nước Trời!”
¹⁶Chúa Giê-xu liền kể chuyện này: “Người kia mở tiệc lớn, mời rất nhiều người, ¹⁷Đến giờ, ông sai gia nhân đi báo cho tân khách: ‘Tiệc đã dọn, xin mời đến dự.’ ¹⁸Nhưng mọi người đều kiếm cớ từ chối. Người này trả lời: Tôi mới mua đám ruộng, phải đi xem, xin cho tôi cáo từ’ ¹⁹Người kia nêu lý do: ‘Tôi vừa mua năm đôi bò, sắp đem cày thử, xin cho tôi kiếu.’ ²⁰Người khác thoái thác: ‘Tôi mới cưới vợ, không đến được.’
²¹Gia nhân trở về phúc trình mọi việc. Chủ tức giận, bảo họ đi mau ra các đường lớn, ngõ hẻm trong thành phố, đưa về những người nghèo đói, tàn tật, què quặt, mù lòa. ²²Tuy nhiên, bàn tiệc vẫn còn nhiều chỗ trống. ²³Chủ lại bảo gia nhân: ‘Vào các con đường nhỏ trong làng, gặp ai mời nấy, đem về cho đầy nhà. ²⁴Vì những người ta mời trước đây sẽ không được nếm một chút gì trên bàn tiệc của ta.’ ”

Điều kiện làm môn đệ Chúa

²⁵Nhân dân theo Chúa thật đông đảo. Ngài quay lại giảng giải: ²⁶“Ai theo ta mà không yêu ta hơn⚓ cha mẹ, vợ con, anh em chị em, và hơn cả tính mạng mình, thì không thể làm môn đệ ta. ²⁷Ai không vác cây thập tự mình theo ta cũng không thể làm môn đệ ta.
²⁸“Vậy anh em phải suy cho kỹ! Có ai trước khi xây nhà⚓ mà không tính toán mọi phí tổn, liệu mình có đủ sức làm cho xong? ²⁹Nếu không, mới đặt nền đã ngưng, sẽ bị chê cười: ³⁰‘Kìa làm nhà nửa chừng đã bỏ cuộc!”
³¹“Có vua nào trước khi ra trận mà không bàn tính cẩn thận, với mười ngàn quân trong tay, liệu có thể chống lại hai mươi ngàn địch quân đang tiến đánh mình không? ³²Nếu không, phải sai sứ giả cầu hòa khi địch quân còn ở xa.” ³³Rồi Chúa kết luận: “Nếu không bỏ hết mọi điều mình có, anh em không thể làm môn đệ ta. ³⁴Muối là vật hữu ích, nhưng nếu muối mất mặn, làm sao lấy lại vị mặn được nữa? ³⁵Muối ấy chẳng dùng làm gì được, dù làm phân bón cũng không xong, đành phải vứt bỏ. Ai có tai, nên lắng nghe!”

A Man with Dropsy Healed on the Sabbath

¹Now it happened, as He went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath, that they watched Him closely. ²And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had dropsy. ³And Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, ⚓“Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”
⁴But they kept silent. And He took him and healed him, and let him go. ⁵Then He answered them, saying, ⚓“Which of you, having a donkey or an ox that has fallen into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?” ⁶And they could not answer Him regarding these things.

Take the Lowly Place

⁷So He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noted how they chose the best places, saying to them: ⁸“When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him; ⁹and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place. ¹⁰⚓But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you. ¹¹⚓For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
¹²Then He also said to him who invited Him, “When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid. ¹³But when you give a feast, invite ⚓the poor, themaimed, the lame, the blind. ¹⁴And you will be ⚓blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

The Parable of the Great Supper

¹⁵Now when one of those who sat at the table with Him heard these things, he said to Him, ⚓“Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!”
¹⁶⚓Then He said to him, “A certain man gave a great supper and invited many, ¹⁷and ⚓sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’ ¹⁸But they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.’ ¹⁹And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.’ ²⁰Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ ²¹So that servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and themaimed and the lame and the blind.’ ²²And the servant said, ‘Master, it is done as you commanded, and still there is room.’ ²³Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. ²⁴For I say to you ⚓that none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.’ ”

Leaving All to Follow Christ

²⁵Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, ²⁶⚓“If anyone comes to Me ⚓and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, ⚓yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. ²⁷And ⚓whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. ²⁸For ⚓which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it— ²⁹lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, ³⁰saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’? ³¹Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? ³²Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace. ³³So likewise, whoever of you ⚓does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.

Tasteless Salt Is Worthless

³⁴⚓“Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? ³⁵It is neither fit for the land nor for the dunghill, but men throw it out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”
