1Sau khi tường thành đã xây xong, các cánh cổng được lắp vào, và những người gác cổng, ca sĩ, người Lê-vi đều được cắt cử vào nhiệm vụ,
2tôi giao cho Ha-na-ni, em tôi, và Ha-na-nia, sĩ quan trấn thủ thành lũy, lo việc cai trị Giê-ru-sa-lem. Ha-na-nia là một người trung thực và kính sợ Thượng Đế hơn nhiều người khác.
3Tôi dặn họ chỉ mở cổng thành khi mặt trời đã lên cao,⚓ đóng cổng cài then khi lính đang còn đứng gác. Phải chọn người dân Giê-ru-sa-lem làm lính gác, cắt đặt phiên gác cho mỗi người, và cho ai nấy được gác đoạn tường thành gần nhà mình,
4Vì thành phố rộng lớn, dân cư ít ỏi, nhà cửa thưa thớt.⚓
5Thượng đế giục lòng tôi triệu tập các nhà lãnh đạo và nhân dân lại để đăng bợ. Và tôi cũng tìm được một sách chép gia phả của những người trở về Giu-đa đợt thứ nhất. Sách ấy có ghi:
6“Đây là tên những người trở về Giê-ru-sa-lem và Giu-đa sau thời gian bị Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa vua Ba-by-luân bắt đi lưu đày.
7Các nhà lãnh đạo gồm có: Xô-rô-ba-bên, Giê-sua, Nê-hê-mi, A-xa-ria, Ra-a-nia, Na-ha-ma-ni, Mạc-đốc, Binh-san, Mích-bê-rết, Biết-vai, Nê-hum và Ba-a-na. Những người Y-sơ-ra-ên khác gồm có:
8Họ Pha-rốt, hai ngàn một trăm bảy mươi hai người;
9họ Sê-pha-ti-gia, ba trăm bảy mươi hai người;
10họ A-ra, sáu trăm nam mươi hai người,
11họ Pha-hát Mô-áp (con cháu của Giê-sua và Giô-áp), hai ngàn tám trăm mười tám người;
12họ Ê-lam, một ngàn hai trăm năm mươi bốn người;
13họ Xát-tu, tám trăm bốn mươi lăm người;
14Về con cháu Xác-cai, bảy trăm sáu mươi người;
15họ Bin-nui, sáu trăm bốn mươi tám người;
16họ Bê-bai, sáu trăm hai mươi tám người;
17họ A-gát, hai ngàn ba trăm hai mươi hai người;
18họ A-đô-ni-cam, sáu trăm sáu mươi bảy người;
19họ Biết-vai, hai ngàn sáu mươi bảy người;
20họ A-đin, sáu trăm năm mươi lăm người;
21họ A-te (con cháu Ê-xê-chia) chín mươi tám người;
22họ Ha-sum, ba trăm hai mươi tám người;
23họ Bết-sai, ba trăm hai mươi bốn người;
24họ Ha-ríp, một trăm mười hai người;
25họ Ghi-bê-ôn, chín mươi lăm người;
26người Bết và Nê-tô-pha, một trăm tám mươi tám người;
27người A-na-tốt, một trăm hai mươi tám người;
28người Bết-Ách-ma-vết, bốn mươi hai người;
29người Ki-ri-át Giê-a-rim, người Kê-phi-ra và người Bê-ê-rốt, bảy trăm bốn mươi ba người;
30người Ra-ma và Ghê-ba, sáu trăm hai mươi mốt người;
31người Mích-ma, một trăm hai mươi hai người;
32người Bê-tên và A-hi, một trăm hai mươi ba người;
33người Nê-bô, năm mươi hai người;
34họ Ê-lam, một ngàn hai tràm năm mươi bốn người;
35họ Ha-rim, ba trăm hai mươi người;
36họ Giê-ri-cô, ba trăm bốn mươi lăm người;
37họ Lô-đơ, Ha-đít và Ô-nô, bảy trăm hai mươi mốt người;
38họ Sê-na, ba ngàn chín trăm ba mươi người.
39Các thầy tế lễ gồm có: Họ Giê-đa-gia thuộc nhà Giê-sua, chín trăm bảy mươi ba người;
40họ Y-mê, một ngàn năm mươi hai người;
41họ Pha-su-rơ, một ngàn hai trăm bốn mươi bảy người;
42họ Ha-rim, một ngàn mười bảy người.
43Người Lê-vi gồm có: Họ Giê-sua và Cát-mi-ên (con cháu Hô-đê-va), bảy mươi bốn người;
44các ca sĩ thuộc họ A-sáp, một trăm bốn mươi tám người
45những người gác cổng thuộc họ Sa-lum, họ A-te, họ Thanh-môn, họ A-cúp, họ Ha-ti-ta và họ Sô-bai, một trăm ba mươi tám người.
46Những người phục dịch Đền thờ gồm có: Họ Xi-ha, họ Ha-su-pha, họ Ta-ba-ốt,
47họ Kê-rốt, họ Sia, họ Ba-đôn,
48họ Lê-ba-na, họ Ha-ga-ba, họ Sanh-mai,
49họ Ha-nan, họ Ghi-đên, họ Ga-ha,
50họ Rê-a-gia, họ Rê-xin, họ Nê-cô-đa,
51họ Ga-xam, họ U-xa, họ Pha-sê-a,
52họ Bê-sai, họ Mê-u-nim, họ Nê-phi-sê-sim
53họ Bác-búc, họ Ha-cu-pha, họ Ha-rua,
54họ Bát-lít, họ Mê-hi-đa, họ Hạc-sa,
55họ Bạt-cô, họ Si-sê-ra, họ Tha-mác,
56họ Nê-xia, họ Ha-ti-pha.
57Con cháu các cựu thần của Sa-lô-môn gồm có: Họ Sô-tai, họ Sô-phê-rết, họ Phi-ri-đa,
58họ Gia-a-la, họ Đạt-côn, họ Ghi-đên
59họ Sê-pha-tia, họ Hát-tinh, họ Bô-kê-rết Hát-xê-ba-im, họ A-môn.
60Tính chung những người phục dịch Đền thờ và con cháu cựu thần của Sa-lô-môn là ba trăm chín mươi hai người.
61Một số người từ Tên-mê-la, Tên-hạt-sa, Kê-rúp, A-đôn và Y-mê trở về Giê-ru-Sa¬lem, nhưng họ không còn gia phả hay, bằng cớ về căn nguyên tông tộc để chứng minh mình là người Y -sơ-ra-ên. Những người này gồm có:
62Họ Đê-la-gia, họ Tô-bia và họ Nê-cô-đa, cộng sáu trăm bốn mươi hai người.
63Con cháu của các thầy tế lễ trong ba họ Ha-ba-gia, Ha-cốt, và Bạt-si-lai (ông này cưới con gái của Bạt-xi-lai người Ga-la-át, nên người ta gọi ông theo tên cha vợ)."
64,65Những người này cũng không tìm được gia phả, nên bị ngưng chức tế lễ⚓ và không được hưởng phần ăn thánh, vì vị tổng trấn muốn chờ đến khi có một thầy tế lễ có thể dùng U-rim và Thu-mim để cầu hỏi Thượng Đế.
66Tổng số các nhóm kể trên lên đến 42.360 người.
67Ngoài ra, có bảy ngàn ba trăm ba mươi bảy nam nữ gia nhân, và hai trăm bốn mươi lăm nam nữ ca sĩ.
68Họ đem theo bảy trăm ba mươi sáu con ngựa, hai trăm bốn mươi lăm con la,
69bốn trăm ba mươi lăm con lạc đà, và sáu ngàn bảy trăm hai mươi con lừa.
70-72Các nhà lãnh đạo đã hiến dâng của cải vào quỹ đài thọ công tác. Tổng trấn dâng một ngàn đa riếc vàng, năm mươi cái chậu, và năm trăm ba mươi bộ lễ phục cho các thầy tế lễ. Một số trưởng tộc dâng hai mươi ngàn đa riếc vàng, hai ngàn hai trăm mi-na-bạc. Nhân dân đóng góp hai mươi ngàn đa riếc⚓ vàng, hai ngàn mi-na⚓ bạc và sáu mươi bảy bộ lễ phục cho các thầy tế lễ.

1Then it was, when the wall was built and I had ⚓hung the doors, when the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites had been appointed,
2that I gave the charge of Jerusalem to my brother ⚓Hanani, and Hananiah the leader ⚓of the citadel, for he was a faithful man and ⚓feared God more than many.
3And I said to them, “Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot; and while they stand guard, let them shut and bar the doors; and appoint guards from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, one at his watch station and another in front of his own house.”
The Captives Who Returned to Jerusalem
4Now the city was large and spacious, but the people in it were⚓few, and the houses were not rebuilt.
5Then my God put it into my heart to gather the nobles, the rulers, and the people, that they might be registered by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of those who had come up in the first return, and found written in it:
6⚓These are the people of the province who came back from the captivity, of those who had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, everyone to his city.
7Those who came with ⚓Zerubbabel were Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah.
The number of the men of the people of Israel:
8the sons of Parosh, two thousand one hundred and seventy-two;
9the sons of Shephatiah, three hundred and seventy-two;
10the sons of Arah, six hundred and fifty-two;
11the sons of Pahath-Moab, of the sons of Jeshua and Joab, two thousand eight hundred and eighteen;

13the sons of Zattu, eight hundred and forty-five;
14the sons of Zaccai, seven hundred and sixty;
15the sons of Binnui, six hundred and forty-eight;
16the sons of Bebai, six hundred and twenty-eight;

43The Levites: the sons of Jeshua, of Kadmiel,
and of the sons of Hodevah, seventy-four.
44The singers: the sons of Asaph, one hundred and forty-eight.
45The gatekeepers: the sons of Shallum,
the sons of Ater,

the sons of Akkub,
the sons of Hatita,
the sons of Shobai, one hundred and thirty-eight.
46The Nethinim: the sons of Ziha,

and the sons of Amon.
60All the Nethinim, and the sons of Solomon’s servants, were three hundred and ninety-two.
61And these were the ones who came up from Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer, but they could not identify their father’s house nor their lineage, whether they were of Israel:
62the sons of Delaiah,
the sons of Tobiah,
the sons of Nekoda, six hundred and forty-two;
63and of the priests: the sons of Habaiah,
the sons of Koz,
the sons of Barzillai, who took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called by their name.
64These sought their listing among those who were registered by genealogy, but it was not found; therefore they were excluded from the priesthood as defiled.
65And the governor said to them that they should not eat of the most holy things till a priest could consult with the Urim and Thummim.
66Altogether the whole assembly was forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty,
67besides their male and female servants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven; and they had two hundred and forty-five men and women singers.
68Their horses were seven hundred and thirty-six, their mules two hundred and forty-five,
69their camels four hundred and thirty-five, and donkeys six thousand seven hundred and twenty.
70And some of the heads of the fathers’ houses gave to the work. ⚓The governor gave to the treasury one thousand gold drachmas, fifty basins, and five hundred and thirty priestly garments.
71Some of the heads of the fathers’ houses gave to the treasury of the work ⚓twenty thousand gold drachmas, and two thousand two hundred silver minas.
72And that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand gold drachmas, two thousand silver minas, and sixty-seven priestly garments.
73So the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the Nethinim, and all Israel dwelt in their cities.

⚓When the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities.
