Giê-rê-mi bị tống giam
1Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa, vua Ba-by-luân, không cho Giê-cô-nia (con vua Giê-hô-gia-kim) lên ngôi thay thế cha mình nhưng lập Sô- đê-kia (con Giô-sia) lên làm vua nước Giu-đa.
2Nhưng từ vua Sê-đê-kia, các nhân viên chính phủ đến cả nhân dân còn sót lại sau đợt lưu đày đầu tiên, không một ai chịu nghe Lời Chúa do Giê-rê-mi truyền lại.
3Tuy nhiên, vua Sê-đê-kia sai Giê-hu-canh (con Sê-lê-mia) và Sô-phô-ni (con thầy tế lễ Ma-a-sê-gia) đến xin tiên tri Giê-rê-mi cầu nguyện cho các nhà lãnh đạo dân tộc.
4(Lúc ấy, Giê-rê-mi chưa bị tống giam nên còn đi lại tự do).
5(Khi cuộc chiến tranh với Ba-by-luân bùng nổ trở lại, quân đội Ba-by-luân bao vây Giê-ru-sa-lem). Quân đội Ai-cập dưới quyền chỉ huy của vua Hóp-ra, tiến vào lãnh thổ nam bộ Giu-đa để giải vây Giê-ru-sa-lem. Vì thế, quân đội Ba-by-luân đổi chiến lược, bỏ Giê-ru-sa-lem, trực chỉ xuống miền nam để chận đường quân đội Ai- cập.
6Chúa liền bảo Giê-rê-mi:
7“Chúa là Thượng Đế của Y-sơ-ra-ên phán: Vì vua Giu-đa sai người đến cầu hỏi Ta về các diễn biến tương lai, nên con hãy trả lời: Quân đội Ai-cập hành quân giải vây cho Giu-đa nhưng sẽ bị thất trận và bỏ chạy về Ai-cập! Người Ba-by-luân sẽ chiến thắng, đuổi quân Ai-cập về nước,
8rồi tập trung quân đội về đây, chiếm đóng và đốt tan thành phố này.
9Đừng tự lừa dối mình rằng: Quân đội Ba-by-luân đã rút hẳn đi rồi! vì chúng không bỏ đi đâu!
10Dù cho các ngươi có đánh tan quân dội Ba-by-luân đến nổi chỉ còn lại những thương binh, thì các thương binh ấy cũng vùng dậy, bỏ trại kéo ra, đốt tan thành phố này."
11Được tin quân đội Ba-by-luân đã tháo vòng vây Giê-ru-sa-lem để tiến công quân đội Ai-cập,
12Giê-nê-mi lên đường, định ra khỏi Giê-ru-sa-lem, xuống xứ Bên-gia-min để xem miếng đất mình đã mua.
13Nhưng mới vừa đi qua cổng Bên-gia-min, Giê-rê-mi đã bị Di-rê-gia, một tên lính canh, bắt và buộc tội 'đào ngũ để theo giặc.' (Di-rê-gia là con Sê-lê-mia, cháu Ha-na-nia).
14Giê-rê-mi đáp: "Anh chỉ khéo bịa đặt! Anh biết tôi không bao giờ theo địch!" Nhưng Di-rê-gia nhất quyết không nghe, cứ bắt Giê-rê-mi giải lên cho các quan lớn trong triều.
15Các quan giận Giê-rê-mi nên tra tấn rồi tống giam vào ngục (lúc bấy giờ nhà của ký lục Giô-na-than được dùng làm nhà tù).
16Giê-rê-mi bị giam trong xà lim lâu ngày.
Vua hỏi ý kiến của Giê-rê-mi
17Vua Sê-đê-kia ra lệnh giải Giê-rê-mi vào cung, bí mật tiếp tiên tri mà hỏi: "Chúa Hằng Hữu có phán dạy gì không?" Giê-rê-mi đáp: "Muôn tâu, có! Chúa bảo bệ hạ sẽ bị nộp vào tay vua Ba-by-luân!"
18Giê-rê-mi tiếp: "Tôi có phạm lỗi gì với bệ hạ hoặc các quan đâu mà bệ hạ bỏ tù tôi?
19Còn những tiên tri đã quả quyết với bệ hạ rằng vua Ba-by-luân chẳng bao giờ tiến đánh bệ hạ và xâm lăng đất nước, bây giờ họ đi đâu cả?
20Muôn tâu, tôi khẩn khoản thỉnh cầu bệ hạ, xin đừng trả tôi về xà lim trong ngục Giô-na-than, kẻo tôi chết mất!"
21Vua ra lệnh giam Giê-rê-mi trong trại Ngự lâm quân, mỗi ngày cấp cho một mẩu bánh mì, cho đến ngày thực phẩm hết sạch trong thành phố. Vậy, Giê-rê-mi bị giam trong trại Ngự lâm quân.

Zedekiah’s Vain Hope
1Now King ⚓Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah.
2⚓But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land gave heed to the words of the Lord which He spoke by the prophet Jeremiah.
3And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and ⚓Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, ⚓“Pray now to the Lord our God for us.”
4Now Jeremiah was coming and going among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison.
5Then ⚓Pharaoh’s army came up from Egypt; and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news of them, they departed from Jerusalem.
6Then the word of the Lord came to the prophet Jeremiah, saying,
7“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Thus you shall say to the king of Judah, ⚓who sent you to Me to inquire of Me: “Behold, Pharaoh’s army which has come up to help you will return to Egypt, to their own land.
8⚓And the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city, and take it and burn it with fire.” ’
9Thus says the Lord: ‘Do not deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely depart from us,” for they will not depart.
10⚓For though you had defeated the whole army of the Chaldeans who fight against you, and there remained only wounded men among them, they would rise up, every man in his tent, and burn the city with fire.’ ”
Jeremiah Imprisoned
11And it happened, when the army of the Chaldeans left the siege of Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army,
12that Jeremiah went out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin to claim his property there among the people.
13And when he was in the Gate of Benjamin, a captain of the guard was there whose name was Irijah the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “You are defecting to the Chaldeans!”
14Then Jeremiah said, “False! I am not defecting to the Chaldeans.” But he did not listen to him.
So Irijah seized Jeremiah and brought him to the princes.
15Therefore the princes were angry with Jeremiah, and they struck him ⚓and put him in prison in the ⚓house of Jonathan the scribe. For they had made that the prison.
16When Jeremiah entered ⚓the dungeon and the cells, and Jeremiah had remained there many days,
17then Zedekiah the king sent and took him out. The king asked him secretly in his house, and said, “Is there any word from the Lord?”
And Jeremiah said, “There is.” Then he said, “You shall be ⚓delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon!”
18Moreover Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “What offense have I committed against you, against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison?
19Where now are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land’?
20Therefore please hear now, O my lord the king. Please, let my petition be accepted before you, and do not make me return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.”
21Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah ⚓to the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread from the bakers’ street, ⚓until all the bread in the city was gone. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
