12 người trinh sát
1Chúa Hằng Hữu bảo Mai-sen: "
2Con chọn trong số các nhà lãnh đạo, mỗi đại tộc một người, sai họ đi do thám Ca-na-an đất Ta cho Y-sơ-ra-ên.
3,4Mai-sen vâng lời, sai mười hai người ra đi từ sa mạc Pha-ran, tất cả đều thuộc cấp lãnh đạo Y-sơ-ra-ên.
5Sam-mua con Xác-cư, thuộc đại tộc Ru-bên,
6Khanh-lý⚓ con Giê-phu-nê, thuộc đại tộc Giu-đa,
7Di-ganh con Giô-sép, thuộc đại tộc Y-sa-ca,
8Hô-sê con Nun, thuộc đại tộc Ép-ra-im,
9Phan-thi con Ra-phu, thuộc đại tộc Bên-gia-min,
10Gát-đinh con Sô-đi, thuộc đại tộc Sa-bu-lôn,
11Ga-đi con Su-si, thuộc đại tộc Giô-sép tức là Ma-na-se,
12A-mi-ên con Ghê-ma-li, thuộc đại tộc Đan,
13Sê-thu con Mi-ca-ên, thuộc đại tộc A-se,
14Na-bi con Vấp-si, thuộc đại tộc Nép-ta-li,
15Gu-ên con Ma-ki, thuộc đại tộc Gát.
16,17Đó là danh sách các thám tử Mai-sen sai đi trinh sát xứ Ca-na-an. Ông đổi tên Hô-sê con của Nun ra Giô-suê. Mai-sen dặn họ: "Các anh đi vào Nam bộ,⚓ lên miền cao nguyên;
18xem thử địa thế ra sao, dân tình thế nào, đông hay thưa, mạnh hay yếu,
19đất tốt hay xấu, thành thị có hào lũy kiên cố hay chỉ là lều trại đơn sơ,
20đất đai màu mỡ hay nghèo nàn, có nhiều cây cối hay tiêu điều. Ngoài ra, hãy cố gắng đem về một ít hoa quả, đừng ngại ngùng." Lúc ấy đúng vào mùa hái nho đầu tiên trong năm.
21Vậy, họ ra đi trinh sát đất này, từ sa mạc Sin tới Rê-hốp, gần Ha-mát.
22Họ đi lên xuyên qua Nam bộ, tới Hếp-rôn, là quê của A-hi-man, Sê-sai và Thanh-mai, con cháu A-nác. (Thành Hếp-rôn được xây trước Xô-an ở Ai-cập bảy năm).
23Họ đến thung lũng Ếch-côn, cắt một chùm nho, hai người phải dùng đòn mới khiêng nổi. Họ cũng hái mấy trái thạch lựu và trái vả đem về.
24Thung lũng ấy được gọi là Ếch-côn⚓ vì các thám tử Y-sơ-ra-ên đã hái nho ở đó.
25Sau bốn mươi ngày do thám, họ trở về
26,27gặp Mai-sen, A-rôn và toàn thể nhân dân Y-sơ-ra-ên tại Ca-đe, trong sa mạc Pila¬ran. Họ cho mọi người xem các trái cây hái được, và báo cáo: "Chúng tôi đã vào xứ ấy theo đúng chỉ thị, đó là một vùng đất rất phì nhiêu, và đây là hoa quả của đất ấy.
28Tuy nhiên, thổ dân rất cường tráng, thành thị rộng lớn và hào lũy kiên cố. Ngoài ra, chúng tôi có thấy bọn khổng lồ (dòng dõi A-nác) ở đó nữa.
29Người A-ma-léc ở tại miền Nam bộ, người Hê-tít, người Giê-bu và người Am-môn ở vùng cao nguyên, còn người Ca-na-an ở miền biển và dọc theo sông Giô-đan."
30Khanh-lý lên tiếng để trấn an nhân dân đang xào xạc trước mặt Mai-sen: "Chúng ta phải đi ngay vào chiếm lấy đất ấy, chúng ta thừa sức chinh phục xứ này."
31Nhưng các thám tử khác nói: "Chúng ta không đủ sức đâu, vì họ mạnh hơn ta."
32Những người này thổi phồng những điểm bất lợi: "Đất này sẽ nuốt chửng dân ta, vì dân cư chúng nó là giống khổng lồ.
33Chúng tôi đã thấy các con cháu A-nác, bọn người khổng lồ⚓ họ to lớn đến độ chúng tôi cảm thấy mình bé nhỏ như những con cào cào khi đứng trước mặt họ."

Spies Sent into Canaan
1And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
2⚓“Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them.”
3So Moses sent them ⚓from the Wilderness of Paran according to the command of the Lord, all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel.
4Now these were their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;
5from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;
6⚓from the tribe of Judah, ⚓Caleb the son of Jephunneh;
7from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;
8from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun;
9from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;
10from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;
11from the tribe of Joseph, that is, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi;
12from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;
13from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael;
14from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi;
15from the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.
16These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called ⚓Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua.
17Then Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, “Go up this way into the South, and go up to ⚓the mountains,
18and see what the land is like: whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, few or many;
19whether the land they dwell in is good or bad; whether the cities they inhabit are like camps or strongholds;
20whether the land is rich or poor; and whether there are forests there or not. ⚓Be of good courage. And bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes.
21So they went up and spied out the land ⚓from the Wilderness of Zin as far as ⚓Rehob, near the entrance of ⚓Hamath.
22And they went up through the South and came to ⚓Hebron; Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of ⚓Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
23⚓Then they came to the Valley of Eshcol, and there cut down a branch with one cluster of grapes; they carried it between two of them on a pole. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs.
24The place was called the Valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the men of Israel cut down there.
25And they returned from spying out the land after forty days.
26Now they departed and came back to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran, at ⚓Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.
27Then they told him, and said: “We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with ⚓milk and honey, ⚓and this is its fruit.
28Nevertheless the ⚓people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of ⚓Anak there.
29⚓The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan.”
30Then ⚓Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.”
31⚓But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.”
32⚓And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and ⚓all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature.
33There we saw the giants (⚓the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were ⚓like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were ⚓in their sight.”
