Sau-lơ không tuân lệnh
1Một hôm, Sa-mu-ên bảo Sau-lơ: "Tôi đã vâng lời Chúa xức dầu, tấn phong ông làm vua Y-sơ-ra-ên. Vậy, bây giờ ông nên thận trọng nghe lời Ngài.
2Chúa Toàn năng phán: Ta sẽ trừng phạt A-ma-léc vì đã phục kích Y-sơ-ra-ên khi họ từ Ai-cập ra đi.
3Bây giờ, ngươi phải đi đánh người A-ma-léc, tận diệt cả nam phụ lão ấu, bò, cừu, lạc đà và lừa của họ.'"
4Vậy, tại Tê-la-im, Sau-lơ động viên quân lực được 200.000 bộ binh chưa kể 10.000 quân Giu-đa.
5Ông kéo quân đến gần thành của người A-ma-léc, dàn trận trong thung lũng,
6và sai người nói với dân Kên: "Tránh xa người A-ma-léc để khỏi bị vạ lây, vì anh em đã cư xử tử tế với Y-sơ-ra-ên khi chúng tôi lìa Ai-cập." Người Kên rút khỏi dân A-ma-léc.
7Sau-lơ đánh bại người A-ma-léc từ Ha-vi-la đến Su-rơ, về phía đông Ai-cập.
8ồng bắt sống A-ga, vua A-ma-léc, và tàn sát tất cả dân chúng.
9Nhưng Sau-lơ và quân sĩ tha chết cho A-ga, cũng không giết những cừu, bò tốt nhất và các cừu con béo mập nhất. Nói chung họ giữ lại những thứ gì tốt, chỉ tiêu diệt những thứ gì xấu, vô giá trị mà thôi.
10Chúa Hằng Hữu bảo Sa-mu-ên:
11“Ta rất tiếc là đã cho Sau-lơ làm vua, vì người ấy không vâng lời Ta." Sa-mu-ên buồn lắm. Ông khóc lóc với Chúa suốt đêm.
12Sáng hôm sau, ông dậy sớm đi tìm Sau-lơ. Có người cho ông hay Sau-lơ đi lên núi Cát-mên dựng cho mình một đài kỷ niệm, sau đó đi xuống Ghinh-ganh.
13Khi Sa-mu-ên tìm được Sau-lơ, Sau-lơ lên tiếng trước: "Xin Chúa ban phước lành cho ông. Tôi thi hành lệnh Chúa xong rồi."
14Nhưng Sa-mu-ên hỏi: "Thế sao tôi còn nghe tiếng cừu kêu và tiếng bò rống?"
15Sau-lơ chống chế: "Anh em binh sĩ có giữ lại những con bò và cừu tốt nhất của người A-ma-léc để dâng cho Chúa Hằng Hữu, Thượng Đế của ông, còn lại chúng tôi đã giết sạch."
16Sa-mu-ên nói: "'Xin đừng nói nữa, để tôi nói cho vua nghe những điều Chúa dạy tôi tối qua." Sau-lơ đáp: "Xin ông nói đi."
17Sa-mu-ên tiếp: "Trong lúc ông tự biết mình thấp hèn, Chúa cho ông lãnh đạo các đại tộc, xức dầu cho ông làm vua Y-sơ-ra-ên,
18và Ngài sai ông đi với sứ mạng tận diệt dân A-ma-léc không để lại một ai.
19Nhưng tại sao ông không vâng lời Chúa? Tại sao ông vồ lấy của cướp, làm điều xấu xa trước mặt Chúa?"
20Sau-lơ đáp: "Tôi có vâng lời Chúa, tôi có thi hành sứ mệnh Chúa giao đấy chứ: tôi chỉ dẫn A-ga về, còn giết sạch người A-ma-léc.
21Nhưng binh sĩ có giữ lại những con bò và con cừu tốt nhất (đáng lẽ phải giết đi) để dâng cho Chúa Hằng Hữu, Thượng Đế của ông tại Ghinh-ganh."
22Sa-mu-ên bảo: "Chúa có thích lễ thiêu và lễ thù ân hơn sự vâng lời Ngài đâu? Vì vâng lời hơn dâng lễ vật, nghe theo hơn dâng mỡ cữu đực.
23Phản nghịch còn hơn tà thuật, ương ngạnh còn hơn thờ tà thần. Vì ông dám cãi mạng Chúa, Ngài cũng từ khước không cho ông làm vua nữa."
24Sau-lơ thú nhận: "Tôi có tội! Tôi không tuân lệnh Chúa, tôi không nghe lời ông vì tôi sợ dân và làm theo điều họ muốn.
25Xin tha tội cho tôi, về với tôi để tôi thờ phụng Chúa."
26Sa-mu-ên đáp: "Không, tôi không về với ông được, vì ông dám cãi mạng Thượng Đế nên Ngài không còn cho ông làm vua Y-sơ-ra-ên nữa."
27Khi Sa-mu-ên quay mình bước đi, Sau-lơ nắm áo giữ ông lại, làm chiếc áo rách toạc.
28Sa-mu-ên nói: "Hôm nay Chúa cũng xé nước Y-sơ-ra-ên khỏi tay ông như thế và đem giao cho một đồng bào của ông là người xứng đáng hơn ông.
29Thượng Đế là vinh quang của Y-sơ-ra-ên không bao giờ nói dối, hay đổi ý vì Ngài đâu phải là người trần."
30Sau-lơ lại năn nỉ: "Tôi có tội, nhưng trước mặt các trưởng lão và nhân dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, xin ông tỏ ra tôn trọng tôi, đi về với tôi để tôi thờ phụng Chúa."
31Sa-mu-ên đi về với Sau-lơ và Sau-lơ thờ phụng Chúa.
32Sau đó, Sa-mu-ên bảo: "Đem A-ga, vua A-ma-léc đến đây!" Khi được dẫn đến A-ga mặt mày hớn hở, mừng thầm: "Chắc ta được thoát chết rồi!"
33Nhưng Sa-mu-ên nói: "Vì lưỡi kiếm của ông đã làm cho nhiều bà mẹ mất con, mẹ ông cũng phải mất con vậy." Rồi ông chặt A-ga ra từng mảnh trước mặt Chúa tại Ghinh-ganh.
34Sau đó, Sa-mu-ên về Ra-ma, còn Sau-lơ về Ghi-bê-a.
35Từ đó Sa-mu-ên không còn gặp Sau-lơ nữa. Lòng Sa-mu-ên rất đau đớn vì cớ Sau-lơ, còn Chúa Hằng Hữu tiếc vì đã lập Sau-lơ làm vua Y-sơ-ra-ên.

The Lord Rejects Saul as King
1Samuel said to Saul, “I am the one the Lord sent to anoint you king over his people Israel; so listen now to the message from the Lord.
2This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt.
3Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy⚓ all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’ ”
4So Saul summoned the men and mustered them at Telaim—two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand from Judah.
5Saul went to the city of Amalek and set an ambush in the ravine.
6Then he said to the Kenites, “Go away, leave the Amalekites so that I do not destroy you along with them; for you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites moved away from the Amalekites.
7Then Saul attacked the Amalekites all the way from Havilah to Shur, near the eastern border of Egypt.
8He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and all his people he totally destroyed with the sword.
9But Saul and the army spared Agag and the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves⚓ and lambs—everything that was good. These they were unwilling to destroy completely, but everything that was despised and weak they totally destroyed.
10Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel:
11“I regret that I have made Saul king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions.” Samuel was angry, and he cried out to the Lord all that night.
12Early in the morning Samuel got up and went to meet Saul, but he was told, “Saul has gone to Carmel. There he has set up a monument in his own honor and has turned and gone on down to Gilgal.”
13When Samuel reached him, Saul said, “The Lord bless you! I have carried out the Lord’s instructions.”
14But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear?”
15Saul answered, “The soldiers brought them from the Amalekites; they spared the best of the sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Lord your God, but we totally destroyed the rest.”
16“Enough!” Samuel said to Saul. “Let me tell you what the Lord said to me last night.”
“Tell me,” Saul replied.
17Samuel said, “Although you were once small in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel.
18And he sent you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; wage war against them until you have wiped them out.’
19Why did you not obey the Lord? Why did you pounce on the plunder and do evil in the eyes of the Lord?”
20“But I did obey the Lord,” Saul said. “I went on the mission the Lord assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king.
21The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in order to sacrifice them to the Lord your God at Gilgal.”
22But Samuel replied:
“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the Lord?
To obey is better than sacrifice,
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
23For rebellion is like the sin of divination,
and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,
he has rejected you as king.”
24Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned. I violated the Lord’s command and your instructions. I was afraid of the men and so I gave in to them.
25Now I beg you, forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord.”
26But Samuel said to him, “I will not go back with you. You have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you as king over Israel!”
27As Samuel turned to leave, Saul caught hold of the hem of his robe, and it tore.
28Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighbors—to one better than you.
29He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a human being, that he should change his mind.”
30Saul replied, “I have sinned. But please honor me before the elders of my people and before Israel; come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord your God.”
31So Samuel went back with Saul, and Saul worshiped the Lord.
32Then Samuel said, “Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites.”
Agag came to him in chains.⚓ And he thought, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”
33But Samuel said,
“As your sword has made women childless,
so will your mother be childless among women.”
And Samuel put Agag to death before the Lord at Gilgal.
34Then Samuel left for Ramah, but Saul went up to his home in Gibeah of Saul.
35Until the day Samuel died, he did not go to see Saul again, though Samuel mourned for him. And the Lord regretted that he had made Saul king over Israel.
